How many times have AC Milan won Serie A?

AC Milan's list of honours is as long as they come. The Rossoneri are Italy's most successful team in Europe with seven Champions Leagues, but how many Serie A titles have they won?

AC Milan are one of the most successful clubs in football history, even beyond their Serie A titles, winning many domestic competitions in Italy and achieving great success in Europe.

The Rossoneri were formed in 1899 as a football and cricket club, cricket never gained any popularity whereas the round ball game has thrived ever since.

Any fans of Italian football will know that the Rossoneri form a part of the big three of Italian football along with Derby della Madonnina rivals Inter and Juventus from Turin, and the trio have combined for 74 Serie A titles between them.

Gre-No-Li transform AC Milan

After World War II ended in 1945, Torino dominated Serie A, winning the scudetto four seasons in a row, but the Superga disaster in May 1949 tragically ended their period of domestic dominance.

AC Milan purchased three Swedish forwards – Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl, and Nils Liedholm – in the summer of 1949 and their creativity as well as prolific scoring turned the Rossoneri into an attacking machine. Milan won four Serie A titles in the 1950s and they also triumphed twice in the 60s.

Milan earned their first gold star when they won the Serie A title for the 10th time in 1978/79, but they suffered relegation twice in the 1980s – the first time was punishment for their involvement in the 1980 Totonero match-fixing scandal – and were at risk of going bankrupt until Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club in 1986.

The Berlusconi era at AC Milan

In the late 1980s, AC Milan boasted some of the best Italian and foreign talent in Serie A such as Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, and Frank Rijkaard. They won the scudetto in 1987/88 with Arrigo Sacchi as coach while his successor Fabio Capello emerged victorious in four out of five seasons in the 1990s.

After Capello left in 1996, the Rossoneri won the Italian championship on another three occasions before Berlusconi sold the club in 2017. Some of the stars in that era included George Weah, Andriy Shevchenko, Cafu, and Kaka.

When Stefano Pioli was appointed coach of AC Milan in October 2019, the Rossoneri had not won the Serie A title since 2010/11 and expectations were low amongst the fanbase. The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played in that previous scudetto triumph, galvanized the squad and they came close to winning the league in 2020/21.

Ibrahimovic struggled to remain fit throughout the 2021/22 season, but Pioli still created a united unit, and the mercurial talents of Rafael Leao inspired Il Diavolo to win their 19th Serie A championship in that campaign.

While Inter, Juventus and AC Milan have won 74 Serie A titles between them, Milan have amassed 19 titles themselves, and although they won championships in the earlier years of their existence, they truly emerged as a force in calcio in the post-war era.

AC Milan won their first Italian title in 1901, and they won it twice more in the 1900s, but they had to wait for more than 40 years for further domestic success.
