AC Milan threatened as Bayern Munich ready to test Rossoneri resolve for Mike Maignan

A long-term injury suffered by Manuel Neuer and the sale of Yann Sommer to Inter has left Bayern Munich weighing up an approach for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with a new arrival needed in Bavaria.

With the Serie A season rapidly approaching, AC Milan are facing a late approach from Bayern Munich for star goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The Frenchman has undoubtedly been one of the most important players for Stefano Pioli and his side in the last two seasons.

According to German newspaper Bild, and as reported by Calciomercato, Bayern are sounding out goalkeeping additions due to concerns over the long-term fitness of Manuel Neuer and a lack of options available to coach Thomas Tuchel.

Germany international Neuer broke his leg in a skiing accident in December and is not expected to return to action until 2024, having undergone a further operation this month.

Meanwhile, Bayern sold Yann Sommer to Inter this summer after bringing him in to deputise for Neuer in January, leaving them with Sven Ulreich as their only senior goalkeeper ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign. Ulreich has only made nine league appearances since returning to Bayern in 2021 though.

Milan determined to retain Maignan

Whilst the Bundesliga champions have been tracking Chelsea‘s Kepa Arrizabalaga, it is reported that they are also monitoring Maignan and are ready to make an approach for the Frenchman.

Maignan has emerged as a key player for Milan since joining from Lille two years ago and was pivotal as the Rossoneri won the Serie A title in 2022, whilst he has kept 25 clean sheets from 54 league games for the club.

Such impressive form has made Milan reluctant to consider losing him, and former sporting directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara set a price tag of €100 million for him when Manchester United enquired in May. It is expected that successors Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani will demand a similar fee before budging on a sale.

Bayern may look elsewhere

Bayern are also keeping a close eye on Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa and may well pursue a move for the Portuguese international instead.

The Bavarian club are already breaking their transfer record to land Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, but are willing to commit further funds towards a new goalkeeper who can serve as first choice until Neuer returns.

With Neuer set to turn 38 in March, the German champions are also looking for a younger option to replace him going forward.
