Everybody is talking about Sandro Tonali with both Newcastle and Chelsea interested in the AC Milan midfielder. Would he succeed in the Premier League if a transfer were to happen this summer?

Premier League sides are swarming all over Serie A for talent this summer, with Newcastle United chasing transfer targets from both clubs in Milan. Following their reported failed attempt to sign Nicolo Barella from Inter, they have now turned their attention to AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle have witnessed a significant rise in profile over the last couple of years, following a successful Saudi-backed takeover in 2021. The Magpies have gone from strength to strength, culminating in securing a UEFA Champions League spot this season. It appears Newcastle now want to flex their muscles with the addition of top Italian talent.

Newcastle’s opening Sandro Tonali offer

After Inter snubbed Newcastle’s Barella offer, the English side has re-directed their recruitment lens towards the Rossoneri, in the hope of signing 23-year-old Sandro Tonali this summer, as they look to strengthen heading into their first UEFA Champions League campaign in 20 years.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, Newcastle have submitted a €50 million offer for Tonali, aligning with the reported figure from The Athletic. In addition to Newcastle’s bid, Chelsea are also said to be interested in Milan’s midfield heartbeat, who has made 48 appearances in this campaign, with Tonali’s season yet to conclude as he prepares for the U21 Euros with Italy.

From sources close to the player, who is set to feature heavily in Romania and Georgia over the coming weeks, there is yet to be any confirmation regarding Newcastle and Chelsea’s interest.

Would Sandro Tonali suit the Premier League?

With the Premier League widely viewed as Europe’s ‘most competitive league’ it would be expected that the majority of players have a desire to play in England. With that said, it’s important to note that Serie A is arguably at its highest level in a decade. Italian sides reached the final of every major European tournament this season, albeit falling short in each of the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League finals.

Tonali should more than cope in the Premier League in terms of quality, the 23-year-old was vital in Milan’s Scudetto win back in 2021/22, featuring 36 times and scoring five times, accumulating three assists and racking up over 2600 minutes.

Tonali only needs to feature for 20 minutes in the U21 European Championship to accumulate over 4,000 minutes for the 2022/23 season, proving the player has the engine sufficient enough to thrive in the Premier League.

Whether you believe Sandro Tonali has or hasn’t earned the right to a big-money Premier League switch, it’s hard to dispute that he’s ready and polished enough to be a mainstay in the midfield of a top English side.
