AC Milan’s American rebuild: Target Chelsea’s Pulisic and fellow USMNT star Musah after Tonali sale

With Sandro Tonali expected to join Newcastle United, AC Milan are ready to go all out in their efforts to strengthen in midfield with Yunus Musah, Christian Pulisic, and Tijjani Reijnders.

With Sandro Tonali now having been officially sold to Premier League club Newcastle United, AC Milan have begun work on strengthening in midfield and will target USMNT pair Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah.

As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan are in desperate need of numbers in the centre of the pitch this summer as they prepare for life after Tonali, whilst Ismael Bennacer is ruled out with injury until November. The Algeria international is then expected to miss further action when called up for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Milan have already made their first move of the transfer window by securing Ruben Loftus-Cheek on a four-year contract from Chelsea, but are keen to bring in additional midfielders.

Musah and Reijnders the top targets

The Rossoneri’s plan is to secure signings with a view to adding pace and dynamism to the team, having recognised their inability to match more physical teams last season, particularly bitter rivals Inter.

Top of the list of targets is Valencia‘s USA international Musah and Milan are optimistic that they can reach an agreement for the 20-year-old, whilst reducing the La Liga‘s club €25 million asking price.

Despite his age, Musah has made at least 30 appearances in each of the past three seasons and Milan coach Stefano Pioli is a keen admirer, with contacts set to intensify now that Tonali‘s sale has been finalised.

Elsewhere, AZ Alkmaar‘s Tijjani Reijnders is also being pursued and Milan have already reached an agreement on a contract with €1.7m per year with him, although a transfer fee with the Dutch club is proving harder to come by.

The Diavolo are ready to part with €18-20m for Reijnders and are hoping to land him as a versatile option who can cover in defence as well as his natural midfield role, but AZ are holding out for at least €25m.

Pulisic negotiations continue

Meanwhile, Milan will continue negotiations with Chelsea to land attacking midfielder Pulisic, taking advantage of their positive relationship with the Premier League club, but will require outgoing transfers before they can secure the USA captain.

The Rossoneri also hope to reach an agreement with Villarreal for Samuel Chukwueze and the Nigerian forward is ready to commit his future to Milan, but this is expected to be the most laborious transfer.

Villarreal are demanding a minimum of €25m but the overall figure could prove closer to €30m, whilst Milan are reluctant to meet this price given Chukwueze only has one year remaining on his contract.

Milan not giving up on Frattesi

Finally, Milan remain in the hunt for Sassuolo‘s in-demand star Davide Frattesi, but his valuation is considered too high and Tommaso Pobega may be offered in exchange to bring the price down.

The Italy international has drawn interest from Inter and boyhood club AS Roma, but Milan are not ready to give up on Frattesi just yet.
