Every AS Roma debutant under Jose Mourinho: Who are the 13 youngsters given a chance by Mourinho?

Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho has been criticised for not giving enough youngsters a chance at previous clubs but he has granted no less than 13 youth teams players their senior debut for AS Roma.

For the majority of his coaching career, AS Roma tactician Jose Mourinho has been accused of, amongst other things, a mistrust of youngsters. The 60-year-old has won many trophies throughout his career, relying predominantly on players that were either high-profile names or possessing a wealth of experience.

However, Mourinho has given no less than 13 players from the AS Roma Primavera their senior debut since his arrival in the Italian capital in 2021, and a few of them featured in the Giallorossi’s 3-0 victory against Sheriff on Europa League Matchday 6 including goalscorer Niccolo Pisilli.

“I commented on our TV channel that I have given a lot of players their debuts with other teams, but all the boys here, except Joao Costa, are all children who grew up here, who used to come to the stadium with their father and grandfather as children,” Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia (via giallorossi.net).

During his tenure at AS Roma, Mourinho has had to deal with several injury woes to key players, which has forced him to place more trust in players from the youth team.

It didn’t take long for Mourinho to promote a youngster from the AS Roma Primavera, giving Ghanaian striker Felix Afena-Gyan against Cagliari in Serie A at the age of 18 in October 2021.

There are other young talents like Dimitrios Keramitsis, Francesco D’Alessio, and Joao Costa who remain in the youth squad, whereas other players such as Filippo Missori and Cristian Volpato have moved to Sassuolo, and Benjamin Tahirovic has joined Ajax.

Despite some of those players not remaining in the senior squad in the long term, Mourinho still acknowledges that kids like Pisilli, Luigi Cherubini, and Mattia Mannini are hometown boys who would fight tooth and nail for the AS Roma jersey.
