AS Roma 2023/24 season preview: Transfers, expectations and early fixtures

AS Roma are looking to make a return to the Champions League but a difficult summer in the transfer window could lead to struggles in their 2023/24 Serie A campaign.

AS Roma go into the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with the pressure of qualifying for the Champions League ramped up even further, after missing out in heart-breaking fashion last term.

The Giallorossi fell to defeat against Sevilla in the Europa League final in a penalty shootout in May, having put all their hopes on making a long-awaited return to the Champions League on lifting the trophy in Budapest.

With Jose Mourinho entering the final year of his contract and unable to secure a top-four finish in his first two seasons at the club, there is a sense that Roma must make the step up in Serie A this term, but their hopes have been hampered by a difficult summer.

AS Roma signings and sales

It has been a difficult summer for Roma and Mourinho as the Giallorossi have not been able to spend to bring any players in, and saw approaches for Gianluca Scamacca and Alvaro Morata come to nothing.

Roma made a quick start to the transfer window by moving early to snap up midfielder Houssem Aouar and defender Evan Ndicka as free agents, the Giallorossi then brought in Leeds United defensive pair Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen on loan.

Since then though, the incomings have ground to a halt and they have not been able to secure a much-needed striker after Tammy Abraham suffered an ACL injury in May, or a centre-back.

Meanwhile, the Lupi have moved midfielders Cristian Volpato and Benjamin Tahirovic on, as well as wingers Carles Perez and Justin Kluivert, and wingback Matias Vina. The main sale was secured in August though, as centre-back Roger Ibanez completed a €28.5 million move to Al-Ahli.

AS Roma 2023/24 season expectations

Whilst supporters are desperate to see the club return to the top end of the table, Roma may have to lower their expectations unless they are able to significantly strengthen in the final weeks of the transfer window.

The Lupi have the makings of an excellent squad and in Paulo Dybala have a genuine matchwinner, but with Andrea Belotti the only recognised striker and without a Serie A goal in over a year, additions are needed.

However, Mourinho is a serial winner and the Portuguese has changed the atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico profoundly, whilst his squad have fully bought into his methods. With rivals being forced to make major sales, there is the potential for Roma to enjoy a strong Serie A campaign and challenge for the top four and silverware in the cups.

Roma have the chance to lay down an early marker after being handed a favourable start to the 2023/24 season. Kicking off the campaign with the visit of Salernitana, the Giallorossi face Hellas Verona, Empoli, and Genoa in their opening six matches. A home clash against AC Milan will be the first major test of Mourinho‘s men though.
