Mourinho’s striker frustrations: Will AS Roma turn to Alexis Sanchez or Leicester City’s Patson Daka?

AS Roma appear set to miss out on Gianluca Scamacca and Alvaro Morata, causing Jose Mourinho to become increasingly concerned at his options. The Lupi may now turn to Leicester City's Patson Daka or ex-Inter man Alexis Sanchez.

AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho is becoming increasingly frustrated with the club’s failure to secure a new striker as the Serie A season rapidly approaches.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Portuguese tactician is unhappy with his options in attack following a long-term injury suffered by Tammy Abraham in May, and moves for striking options have thus far failed to come to fruition.

With Abraham ruled out until 2024, Mourinho is left with only Andrea Belotti as a recognised centre-forward in his squad. The former Torino captain was unable to trouble the scorers in Serie A last term though, and there is cause for concern at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of Roma‘s season opener against Salernitana on August 20.

Mourinho makes his concerns known

Whilst Mourinho has been demanding a proven striker, Roma‘s limited room to manoeuvre in the transfer market has made it difficult for sporting director Tiago Pinto to land a deal and the club are limited to loans without obligations to buy, unless they can sell a first team player.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho has made clear to Pinto his need for a new attacker as he seeks a more proactive approach to the team’s style of play this season, laying bare his demands during a preseason camp in Portugal.

Indeed, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach had focused on strengthening the defence in his first two seasons at the club, but feels a look towards the final third is what is required to secure Champions League qualification.

This has led to increasing levels of frustration for Mourinho, who made a point of his lack of options in an Instagram post showing a gap in his squad for a striker, whilst he feels that Belotti would not suit the team’s new style of play.

Scamacca and Morata deals fall flat

The Lupi had hoped to bring ex-academy prospect Gianluca Scamacca back to the club from West Ham United, but are now likely to miss out to Inter after being unable to match the Nerazzurri’s offer of €22 million. Roma had proposed a loan worth €5m and to make up the shortfall next summer, but the Hammers have rejected the approach for the Italy international.

It is a similar story in the pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, who is no closer to making the switch to Rome despite a lengthy pursuit by the capital club. With Atleti insisting on a €20m release clause being met, Roma are now being forced to look elsewhere.

Daka or Sanchez?

Indeed, the Giallorossi may now need to turn to the Championship and Leicester City for their third-choice option, with Patson Daka emerging as a target. The Zambia international has been on Roma‘s radar since his spell at Red Bull Salzburg, but a deal could be difficult due to the lack of a release clause in Daka‘s contract.

Alternatively, Roma could seek to bring Alexis Sanchez back to Serie A following the termination of his Marseille contract. The former Udinese and Barcelona forward was linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico whilst at Inter in January 2021, before a deal to exchange him with Edin Dzeko collapsed.

The Chilean netted 18 times for Marseille last season and would be available as a free agent, with Roma considering an approach for the veteran.

Back-up options Roma could turn to

Should they fail to secure a forward, Roma have other options within Serie A and will pursue Bologna‘s Marko Arnautovic or Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata in order to appease Mourinho. Neither are considered to be high on the list of targets though and would represent an act of desperation.

Finally, Roma could look to the South American market for reinforcements, as they monitor Santos starlet Marcos Leonardo and Lucas Beltran of River Plate. The latter is valued at almost €20m by the Argentine club though, making a deal unlikely.
