AS Roma striker search: Giallorossi officials meet Chelsea for Lukaku deal, Azmoun arrival imminent

AS Roma have been hunting for strikers all summer but they could suddenly get two through the door. Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku is a serious possibility, whilst Sardar Azmoun's arrival is imminent.

After a strong start with the free transfers of Evan Ndicka and Houssem Aouar and then a flurry in the midfield recently that saw Renato Sanches and Leandro Paredes arrive, AS Roma are desperate to add at least one more striker to the team. That hunt has led them to Chelsea’s door.

Having been linked with seemingly every big club in Italy and a few more away from Serie A too, Lukaku could potentially find his new home in Rome.

As well as that deal, will soon sign Sardar Azmoun from Bayer Leverkusen, meaning there could potentially be four strikers at Roma for Jose Mourinho to manage this season.

Lukaku and Azmoun on the way

Jose Mourinho has been clear that he would like at least one more striker at the club this summer given Tammy Abraham remains injured and, whilst he impressed in the opening match against Salernitana, Andrea Belotti still has a lot to prove at Roma.

Signing Romelu Lukaku would be a real statement for Roma and it is a move that makes a lot of tactical sense. He is at his best when playing in a two-striker formation which Mourinho likes to use when possible.

It has been widely reported that Roma officials have flown to be in attendance at Chelsea vs Luton on Friday night in the Premier League, with a view to discussing a deal in more depth. A loan move looks much more likely, and the main sticking point is the loan fee.

Mourinho’s thoughts on Lukaku and Azmoun

Even if that deal does not happen, Mourinho is getting a new striker. It was reported by Gianluca Di Marzio that the Iranian has already signed his contract in Rome and will soon be officially announced.

In his press conference, translated by Patrick Kendrick, Mourinho spoke very honestly about Azmoun, saying: “If Azmoun had done well at Leverkusen, he wouldn’t have been offered to us on loan.”

He also showed happiness with getting his new striker(s), saying: “When the GM [Tiago Pinto] offered me Azmoun he told me another one would be joining too. That’d make me happy. If another one comes in and is a quality forward… with Belotti, Azmoun and this third striker, those would be good options up front.”

Azmoun has been known for some pretty childish behaviour during his career, so it could be very interesting to see what Mourinho can get out of the 28-year-old. He will join on loan with an option to buy for €12m.
