AS Roma transfers: Chelsea striker becomes key in Giallorossi pursuit for Scamacca

AS Roma are in the market for a new striker and Chelsea's potential sale of Armando Broja to West Ham could speed up a move for Gianluca Scamacca.

AS Roma could sign Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham thanks to a potential deal that would see the Hammers sign Armando Broja from Premier League rivals Chelsea as a replacement.

The 24-year-old Scamacca joined the English club in the summer of 2022, and he had a season to forget, scoring three goals in 16 Premier League matches as well as suffering a knee injury that ended his campaign. West Ham coach David Moyes has not been impressed with the Italy international and he is looking at ways to reinforce his attack.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, AS Roma general director Tiago Pinto made contact in early July to discuss signing Scamacca on loan, which the Londoners had no interest in. However, in the event that Broja arrives from Chelsea, it would mean that the Italian striker is surplus to requirements and would be free to leave.

AS Roma would contemplate paying a fee to West Ham to sign Scamacca on loan, and then acquire him outright if certain conditions are met. One condition is linked to the Giallorossi qualifying for the 2024/25 Champions League and the other is based on competitive appearances.

With Jose Mourinho not likely to get his first choice in Alvaro Morata, there are alternatives such as Leicester City striker Patson Daka and RB Leipzig forward Andre Silva who are under consideration, in addition to Scamacca.

In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Roma Press), Scamacca discussed his love for Roma.

Roma? It’s my home. And [Francesco] Totti remains my idol as a child. And what player in the world wouldn’t dream of being coached by [Jose] Mourinho? I am convinced that Mou would get the best from me and with him I would improve even more,” he said. “I spoke to [Lorenzo] Pellegrini, he’s a friend, and let’s just say we joked around a bit.”

How does Broja facilitate the Scamacca move to AS Roma?

West Ham have offered Chelsea €35 million plus bonuses for Broja, a deal which is expected to go through fairly swiftly. The Albania international is eager to leave the Blues after they signed Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal and Moyes wants a forward with Broja’s characteristics. He has also been left out of their pre-season plans.

Meanwhile, a move to AS Roma would make sense for Scamacca because he is a Roman, he played in the youth team from 2012 until 2015, and Italy coach Roberto Mancini will be able to pay closer attention to him.
