AS Roma transfers: Matic stuns Giallorossi with transfer demands as Mourinho’s frustrations increase

AS Roma have been left surprised by midfielder Nemanja Matic's insistence on leaving for Rennes, as coach Jose Mourinho's frustrations at the club's activity in the transfer market continue to grow.

AS Roma‘s troubles in the transfer market have deepened amidst suggestions that midfielder Nemanja Matic is keen to leave the club, much to the despair of coach Jose Mourinho.

As reported by Calciomercato, the former Serbia international is ready to call time on his stint in Serie A after just a single season, having reached an agreement with Rennes in Ligue 1, and is pushing for a transfer.

Matic sat out Roma‘s 2-1 preseason friendly defeat to Toulouse, with injury given as the reason for his absence, but it is suggested that the 35-year-old’s uncertain future at the club was a significant factor in being left out.

Roma went into the summer transfer window with no intention of losing Matic and saw the veteran as an important figure on and off the pitch, with the former Chelsea player considered a leader in the dressing room.

The player’s stance has taken the Lupi by surprise and the club are concerned that Matic will demand to leave for France, leaving them dangerously short of options in midfield.

Matic joined Roma as a free agent in 2022 and penned a one-year contract extension in January on a deal that sees him earn €4.3 million, but has agreed terms with Rennes and is waiting for a transfer fee to be finalised. For their part, Rennes are reluctant to pay more than a nominal fee for the ex-Benfica man.

The news of Matic‘s intention to leave has rocked the Giallorossi and is set to add to Mourinho‘s frustrations at the club’s lack of movement in the transfer market.

Having previously worked with the midfielder at Chelsea and Manchester United, Mourinho has relied on Matic since the player’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico, and his exit is likely to cause further tension with sporting director Tiago Pinto.

Roma have been actively working on signing a new centre-back and a striker, but with funds limited they had not factored in the need to secure another midfielder. Should Matic move on, the capital club’s transfer plans may need to be overhauled significantly to stretch the budget to another defensive midfield option.

Mourinho has seen moves for strikers Gianluca Scamacca and Alvaro Morata fail to come to fruition, whilst the only incomings have been free agents Houssem Aouar and Evan Ndicka, and loanees Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen.
