Mourinho’s AS Roma frustrations ease as PSG pair Sanches and Paredes to replace Matic

With Nemanja Matic completing a transfer to Rennes, AS Roma have moved quickly to bring in Paris Saint-Germain's Renato Sanches and Leandro Paredes, with the latter set for a second spell at the club.

AS Roma have finally made a breakthrough in their attempts to add to the squad in the transfer market before the start of the Serie A season, as they close in on Paris Saint-Germain pair Renato Sanches and Leandro Paredes.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi’s frustrations at being unable to finalise a transfer since Rasmus Kristensen joined on loan from Leeds United on July 14 have been tempered by the impending arrival of the two midfielders.

Sporting director Tiago Pinto has been in Paris to negotiate with PSG and secure the release of long-term target Sanches, as well as Argentina international Paredes. The duo are set to fly into Ciampino airport and complete medicals in the city before being announced as new Roma players.

Renato Sanches set for Roma loan

The Giallorossi have been keen to bring in Portuguese star Sanches since the start of the summer and see him as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, after opting against signing the Dutchman permanently following an unproductive season on loan from PSG last term.

Sanches will seal a loan switch to the Stadio Olimpico with an obligation to purchase for €12 million provided certain triggers are met, and he is considered the missing piece in coach Jose Mourinho‘s midfield plans for the upcoming season.

The 25-year-old had been deemed surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes and has struggled to establish himself since joining from Lille in 2022, but Mourinho has been keen to link up with his compatriot.

Paredes returns to Roma after Matic exit demands

As for Paredes, he will be returning to familiar territory after representing Roma from 2014 until being sold to Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2017, but the deal has rapidly come together over recent days.

Despite being in talks with Galatasaray following a loan spell with Juventus last season, the 2022 World Cup winner will now complete a move to Roma after the Lupi moved quickly to react to Nemanja Matic‘s demand to leave the club.

The Serbian veteran stunned staff and teammates after making clear his intentions to join Rennes and sign a more lucrative contract, and has now completed a switch to the Ligue 1 outfit.

As such, Pinto turned to PSG to include a deal for Paredes in the negotiations for Sanches, and the 29-year-old will sign a two-year contract with the option of a third should he feature in at least 50% of Roma‘s Serie A games in 2024/25.
