AS Roma transfers: Saudi Pro League interest arrives for Ibanez as Giallorossi urgently seek cash

AS Roma need to sell Roger Ibanez so that they can address other areas of the squad. They are now fielding interest from Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Al Ahli for the Brazilian defender.

There is a feeling right now that Roger Ibanez holds the keys to the rest of AS Roma‘s 2023 summer transfer window, given he is the best saleable asset who seems to have some genuine interest in his services.

The majority of that interest has been coming from Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who are not afraid to splash the cash if they feel the player is right. Some reports claimed that a €25m bid arrived that was not accepted, whilst Ibanez‘s agent says otherwise.

Roma are yet to spend any money this summer, seeing Evan Ndicka and Houssem Aouar arrive on free transfers, with Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente coming in on loan. Given how deep into the window we are, it is fair to assume that Roma need to sell to buy, which is why interest from elsewhere in Ibanez could be great news for the Giallorossi.

Nottingham Forest are the team that have been linked most consistently with Ibanez, but his agent, Lodovico Spinosi, was quick to shut those rumours down when he spoke to Tag24 (via Roma Press).

“It’s just talk, there hasn’t been any offer from Nottingham Forest,” Spinosi said. “I’ve heard rumours of interest, but no concrete action has followed at the moment.

Ibanez is doing very well at Roma and wants to stay, he feels valued by the coach and his teammates. He is in love with the city and the fans, so he wants to continue playing for these colours.

“He is totally concentrated in training and giving his best for the team. Naturally, if an offer were to arrive, we would consider it.”

The supposed offer was €25m, but Roma are adamant that they want €30m for the Brazilian defender, especially given 10% of the fee will need to be given to Atalanta due to a sell-on clause. Roma are very keen to sign a new striker, and perhaps address other areas of the squad too.

Aston Villa and Al Ahli enter the fray for Ibanez

It was recently reported by Corriere dello Sport that Nottingham Forest are not the only Premier League club looking at Ibanez. Aston Villa have requested information on Ibanez, who had a very mixed campaign for the Giallorossi in 2022/23. Incidentally, Corriere dello Sport also claim that Forest’s bid was genuine and Ibanez would want €4-5 million per season there.

He is an extremely committed defender, but his emotions can get the better of him too often. That leads to errors, be they on the ball or off of it as he picks up a lot of cards.

Having already signed Pau Torres this summer from Villarreal, it is hard to imagine that Ibanez would walk into Unai Emery‘s back line at Aston Villa.

The good news for Roma is that Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli have started to show some interest in Ibanez, according to Sky Sport (via Purely due to riches, there is more of a chance that they can offer the €30m that Roma want whilst also paying 100% of his wages.
