AS Roma close to Women’s Champions League group stage after impressive win over Vorskla

AS Roma Women comfortably beat Vorskla in the first leg of their second round qualifying tie for the Women's Champions League, meaning they have one foot in the group stages.

AS Roma Women took a huge step towards the Women’s Champions League group stage on Wednesday afternoon by beating Ukrainian side Vorskla 3-0 at the Stadio Tre Fontane.

Alessandro Spugna‘s side made it to the quarter-finals of the UWCL last season and they got the 2023/24 journey underway knowing that just one two-legged tie stands between them and another place in the group stages.

Whilst they took a relatively early lead against Vorskla, it took a while to gain full control over the tie but a very impressive second half from the Giallorosse was enough to make a second-ever group stage campaign a likely outcome.

Spugna puts faith in established AS Roma stars

Alessandro Spugna has got a lot of new players at his disposal this season which presents the task of integrating into the existing squad which did so well last season, winning Serie A Femminile.

In the most recent domestic match, a 5-0 win away at Pomigliano, he started with six new players in the team. Four of those new players were responsible for all five of the goals. Against Vorskla, though, he went with his trusted stars from last season which meant that only two new players were in the starting eleven.

One of them, Evelyne Viens, opened the scoring with a finish at the far post in the first half but it was last season’s heroes that secured the win. Midfielder Manuela Giugliano made it 2-0 in the second half as she got on the end of a cross from Emilie Haavi, whilst the third came from the ever-reliable Valentina Giacinti after some great movement in the box.

The return leg between Roma and Vorskla will take place on October 18 at 14:30. The second leg will actually also take place at the Stadio Tre Fontane, Roma‘s home ground, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine which makes it unsafe to travel there.
