Atletico Madrid 2-1 Inter (2-2 agg, Atleti win on penalties): Goals, highlights and report – Champions League 2023/24

Serie A involvement in the 2023/24 Champions League ended with a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat for Inter against Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, after losing their last-16 second-leg tie 2-1 in Spain.

Inter suffered penalty shootout heartache at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano and exited the 2023/24 Champions League, after a 2-1 loss in their last-16 second-leg clash with Atletico Madrid.

Federico Dimarco had doubled the Nerazzurri’s aggregate advantage on 33 minutes, but Atletico attacker Antoine Griezmann reduced the overall deficit almost immediately for the hosts and Memphis Depay scored just before the end of the game to deny Inter a quarter-final place.

A goalless extra-time resulted in spot kicks, where Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen were denied by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, and captain Lautaro Martinez blazed his effort high into the stands to confirm a 3-2 defeat on penalties.

After reaching the final of the competition last season and with them flying high domestically, the Nerazzurri will be disappointed not to reach the next stage, but should have a Serie A title in the coming months to soften the blow.
