Barella transfer saga: Is the Italian likely to join Newcastle United or stay at Inter?

There have been a number of contradictory reports about Nicolo Barella and his Inter future, with seemingly far-fetched stories suggesting a Newcastle move was close. Here's all you need to know about his situation.

Italian media outlets have strongly denied reports from England that Premier League side Newcastle United are close to signing Inter star Nicolo Barella. Going further, it has has been reported that the midfielder is not even being considered for sale by the Champions League finalists.

With a need to balance their finances this summer, there will certainly be departures from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza during the coming weeks, but the Nerazzurri are unlikely to want to lose a key player in their journey to the Champions League final last season.

Naturally, though, their financial situation brings with it uncertainty and the opening of the summer transfer window also leads to stories – whether based on truth or completely fabricated – about the futures of high-profile players.

But what is the reality of the situation surrounding Nicolo Barella and a potential Inter exit this summer, and could he really join Newcastle in the Premier League?

Has Barella spoken to Newcastle United?

According to The Telegraph, the two clubs had apparently already reached an agreement on a €58m deal. The same outlet also stated that the 26-year-old and his representatives had been talking to the club, as the Magpies look to strengthen their squad ahead of their own Champions League campaign.

However, as soon as that news hit the headlines on the peninsula, Calciomercato were one of the first to calm the fears of Inter fans. The Italian publication are insisting that not only is a deal not close, but that the Italy international has never spoken to the Premier League club.

Could Barella leave Inter?

With financial pressures at Inter, some difficult discussions need to be had and decisions made, but Calciomercato also highlighted that Barella has not even spoken to his current employers about his future at the club, as he is currently on international duty.

It is also worth noting that Barella is a lifelong Inter fan and has never shown any desire to play anywhere else since earning his dream move from Cagliari. He has never expressed a desire to play overseas.

If the Nerazzurri decide to consider offers for the Sardinian, though, it is likely to be at a far higher valuation than the figure reported, particularly after the less experienced Jude Bellingham recently joined Real Madrid for €103m plus future add-ons.
