Inter were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in their final Champions League group game at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. There was a goal in each half from Benjamin Pavard and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to seal the three points and a 100% record for the German side.

Inter felt aggrieved after just a few minutes when Nicolo Barella’s powerful striker from the edge of the box hit the arms of Sadio Mane in the box but no penalty was given.

The Nerazzurri then fell behind after half an hour when Pavard rose higher than Lautaro Martinez from a corner and headed into an empty space in the goal. The second goal for the German side came in emphatic style. Choupo-Moting was given plenty of space just out from the edge of Inter’s box and he made the Nerazzurri pay for it. The Cameroonian’s shot was always rising as it flew into the top corner of Andre Onana’s net.

With just 15 minutes left to play when that second goal went in, it certainly seemed as though the contest was over and that is how it proved in Bavaria. Neither team was likely to risk injuries in the search for more goals with their fate’s decided.

Inter’s Champions League goal achieved

Despite the defeat against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in the Allianz Arena, Inter will be happy with how their European campaign has gone.

The aim was to get into the next round and it was clear when the draw was made that the two games against Barcelona would be where that was achieved or not.

Getting those four points against the Spanish side and winning the games against Viktoria Plzen meant that the two defeats against Bayern Munich paled into insignificance.

It is the second year in a row that Simone Inzaghi has guided his Inter side into the Round of 16 in this tournament and it is his third year in a row personally as he did the same with Lazio in 2020/21.

The Nerazzurri finish second in Group C with 10 points and they will not be seeded in the Round of 16 draw.
