Dzeko’s Inter departure: Striker thought Nerazzurri chose Lukaku over him – ‘I would have gladly stayed’

Edin Dzeko departed Inter in the summer and the striker has revealed that he thought the club had chosen Romelu Lukaku over him and he would have liked to stay.

After arriving at Inter in the 2021/22 season, Edin Dzeko quickly became a reliable option for the Nerazzurri. As a starter or coming from the bench, Simone Inzaghi had a reliable veteran goalscorer available.

However, with the Bosnian turning 38 in March, the club viewed it as the right time to part ways with other strikers on the market who were expected to join, namely Romelu Lukaku on a permanent deal.

Dzeko sat down with Prime Video (via Calciomercato.com) to discuss his departure from Inter, his views on the Lukaku saga that headlined Inter‘s 2023/24 summer transfer window, and Marcus Thuram.

Dzeko became a real favourite at Inter as he scored 31 times for the club and got 15 assists. It was his availability that made him so valuable, but as he says, it wasn’t the goodbye that he hoped for.

“Those two years didn’t end the way we dreamed, but that’s football,” the 37-year-old said. “Perhaps in the Champions League we gave everything and then we thought that in Serie A we could give a bit less.”

The idea of Dzeko moving on did not worry Inter fans too much given it seemed that Lukaku would join on a permanent deal and another striker would likely take the place of Joaquin Correa who was destined to leave.

On the topic of Lukaku, Dzeko revealed: “Looking at the choice [they made] on me, I was sure that Inter had made it in order to give Lukaku more confidence and not to have a player, let’s say an important player like me, who could have annoyed him a bit and who maybe wouldn’t have let him be a regular starter.

“I was really surprised that in the end, Lukaku didn’t go to Inter,” before adding, “I would have gladly stayed, I was happy at Inter.”

Dzeko optimistic about Inter’s future with Marcus Thuram

Inter reinforced their attacking options early in the 2023/24 summer transfer window with the addition of free agent, Marcus Thuram. They later ended up adding Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez.

The Frenchman has already started well in Milan, scoring twice and assisting three times in five Serie A matches.

Although it’s early doors, Dzeko offered confidence to the new striker, stating: “Lautaro [Martinez][Marcus] Thuram? I like them, maybe Thuram has to get used to it for a moment, but he’s moving well.”
