The European Super League project failed within hours of its announcement in 2021. Of the initial 12 clubs involved in the project, nine had distanced themselves from the breakaway league just hours after stating their intent to form part of it. Now, Juventus are set to follow suit and leave just Real Madrid and Barcelona as committed to the Super League.
AC Milan and Inter were the other Serie A sides originally involved in the project, though the Milanese clubs each pulled out as English Premier League clubs withdrew their interest after strong backlash from fans.
Now, Juventus are also distancing themselves from the idea. As has been reported by the BBC, Juventus have written to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona to organise talks which, the club write, concern “the potential exit of Juventus from the Super League Project”.
Juventus’ turbulent 2022/23
Nobody at Juventus will be disappointed to see the 2022/23 season come to an end, with the Old Lady facing a series of problems off the pitch. Without their 10-point deduction, though, the Bianconeri would have ended the campaign on 72 points, the same number as Inter, which would have seen them qualify for the Champions League above AC Milan.
But their campaign has been plagued by off-field issues. With the capital gains case ongoing back in November 2022, the club’s entire board resigned late one night.
That case went on for the remainder of the season and brought plenty of twists with it. At first, the club were docked 15 points in Serie A, only for that to later be suspended upon appeal.
But Juventus were unable to escape punishment entirely and were hit with a 10-point deduction as part of a plea bargain as the Serie A season neared its end, which saw them drop out of the top four.
By the end of the season, Juventus found themselves in seventh place with 62 points. That may see the Old Lady play in the 2023/24 Europa Conference League, pending the outcome of UEFA’s own investigation into the club.
