Fiorentina strenghten their position as best of the rest in Serie A Femminile, whilst Ganz runs out of time at AC Milan

Fiorentina secured another win on Matchday 8 of the 2023/24 Serie A Femminile season and they are building a buffer to those behind them. One of those teams is AC Milan, who are now under new management.

With the change of format in Serie A Femminile ahead of the 2022/23 season, we knew that the league would be split in two partway through and it would feel as if the split happened much earlier than when it officially did.

As it turned out, there were really three sections. The top two teams of AS Roma and Juventus, the next three teams filling up the Scudetto Pool, and then the five in the Survival Pool. That means there was a battle to be the best of the rest behind the top two.

In the 2023/24 season, the same thing is happening and it is Fiorentina that are charging away from the two Milan sides, winning again on Matchday 8. That could change soon, though, because AC Milan have parted ways with head coach Maurizio Ganz and are under new leadership.

Fiorentina continue impressive start to the season

Naturally, the focus at the top of the table has been on current champions AS Roma and their only realistic challenger, Juventus. The Bianconeri have won every game except the one against Roma, whilst Roma have won all eight games so far and look unstoppable.

As was the case last season, you’d expect AC Milan and Inter to be battling behind the top two, with Fiorentina in the mix too. As it has turned out, Fiorentina are the clear third-best team in Serie A Femminile right now.

Under the guidance this season of Sebastian de le Fuente, Como Women‘s coach last season, they have almost matched Juventus‘ record after eight games. The only difference is that they have drawn one and lost one, whilst Juventus have one defeat and no draws.

La Viola did well to beat Como 3-0 on Matchday 8, considering the great start to the season that Como have had as well. Players such as Veronica Boquete, Michela Catena and Miriam Longo have been enjoying a great campaign and they have built up a six-point lead over Inter are fourth.

Whilst the gap may only be two points between Juventus and Fiorentina, there is still little belief that Roma and Juventus won’t be the top two come the end of the season. Fiorentina are yet to play Roma and the only game they have lost was against Juventus. Nonetheless, it would be a great achievement for Fiorentina to finish above both Milan sides and they are well on track to do that right now.

AC Milan part ways with Maurizio Ganz

One of the reasons why Fiorentina are likely to finish ahead of AC Milan is that there is already a 10-point gap between the two sides as the Rossonere have had a shocking start to the season.

Their latest result was a 1-1 draw at home against Sampdoria, a team who were not even sure they would be taking part in the action just a week or so before the season got underway. It was another lacklustre performance from a team that is so much less than the sum of its parts.

Milan fans have been wanting the club to part ways with Ganz for at least 18 months, and it finally happened in the days following the Sampdoria draw. They have replaced him with Davide Corti, who was the coach of the women’s Primavera team.

There are a number of quality players in this Milan team and they should be the closest challengers to Juventus and Roma. There are also talented players who have left the club during Ganz’s reign and they were celebrating on social media when Milan announced his departure…
