Villar: Mourinho ruined my time at AS Roma, Sampdoria didn’t pay me

Having been a regular under Paulo Fonseca, Gonzalo Villar was quickly dismissed by Jose Mourinho and the Spaniard had plenty to say about the current AS Roma coach.

Getafe midfielder Gonzalo Villar has hit out at AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho, and has claimed that Sampdoria did not pay his wages during a recent loan stint in Liguria.

The Spaniard was a prominent member of the Giallorossi squad under Mourinho’s predecessor, Paulo Fonseca, but failed to make a Serie A appearance for the club since Mourinho took charge in the summer of 2021.

Villar banished by Mourinho

In an interview with Spanish radio station Cope following his loan move to Getafe this month, Villar blasted Mourinho for ruining his time at the Stadio Olimpico, and felt that the Portuguese tactician had soured a positive relationship that he enjoyed with Roma.

“It was a fantastic experience, until someone we all know arrived,” the 24-year-old declared.

“I don’t want to talk much about him, I’d prefer to keep quiet. After his arrival my adventure with Roma was interrupted and that led me to difficult situations.”

Villar featured six times under Mourinho as Roma lifted the Europa Conference League, but was sent to Getafe on loan in January 2022, before returning to the La Liga club again this month.

The former Elche midfielder had been a regular under Fonseca, appearing in all but five of Roma‘s Serie A matches in 2020-21, and featuring 47 times in all competitions that term.

Sampdoria struggles

Having fallen out of favour under Mourinho, Villar was sent to Sampdoria at the start of the season but endured a difficult spell with the Blucerchiati, as they languish in the relegation zone.

Villar admitted that whilst he appreciated more regular football, with 15 Serie A appearances, the club’s financial woes had played heavily on him.

“It was quite complex. On a personal level, I played a lot, but the financial situation was complicated, I hadn’t been paid for several months.

“It was the most difficult situation I have experienced in professional football,” Villar concluded.

The Spain international is contracted at Roma until June 2024, but Getafe have an option to buy him at the end of the current campaign.
