Atalanta set to benefit from bidding war between PSG and Man Utd for Rasmus Hojlund

The interest in Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund is starting to intensify and there could be a straight fight between PSG and Manchester United for the Dane's signature, a situation that will please La Dea.

Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund has quickly become the next young striker on every top European club’s wishlist, including PSG and Manchester United who are both in the market for a new goalscorer.

In the latter stages of the 2022/23 season, and even the opening few weeks of the 2023 summer transfer window, it seemed that Victor Osimhen would be the biggest striker to leave Serie A. However, with Napoli‘s €150 million asking price for the Nigerian, most, if not all interested parties, have turned their attention to Atalanta’s Danish starlet Hojlund.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to enter a bidding war for the youngster, but it is believed to be the Premier League side that is winning the battle for his signature.

For Atalanta, though, the prospect of a bidding war comes as good news. It is the ideal scenario for a selling club of the Nerazzurri’s size as they may be able to squeeze an extra €10-15m out of the eventual winner.

For some time, Manchester United have lacked a proficient and more importantly, long-term No.9, and this is something that coach Erik ten Hag is well aware of. After securing a deal for Andre Onana from Inter, United‘s priority is now a striker.

The club has held an interest in Hojlund since towards the tail-end of the previous campaign and have remained firm favourites to secure the signature of the 20-year-old since.

La Gazzetta dello Sport and multiple English sources have reported that Manchester United have already agreed on personal terms with the striker, something that PSG are yet to do.

How could Mbappe’s potential PSG exit affect Hojlund and Man United?

The transfer saga surrounding Kylian Mbappe and his potential PSG exit took another turn this summer with the club not including the Frenchman in their pre-season tour squad. That puts Luis Enrique‘s side much more firmly in the frame for a new striker, and Hojlund is one of the most attainable targets.

PSG know that they can try and sell Mbappe to the highest bidder this summer, or they can lose him for free next summer, almost certainly to Real Madrid. It appears unlikely that he will sign another contract at the club, though those parties have been here before.

With this in mind, it is expected that PSG will launch a bid for Hojlund, in order to maximise their chances of landing their ideal Mbappe replacement. However, news of the situation has also reached Manchester, meaning that Atalanta are braced for bids from both very soon.
