Inter 1-0 Benfica: Goals, highlights and report – Champions League 2023/24

Marcus Thuram's second-half strike was enough for Inter to take three important Champions League points against Benfica on Matchday 2, and the Nerazzurri missed a host of chances to enjoy a more comfortable night in Milan.

Inter were much the better side as they beat Benfica 1-0 to claim their first Champions League win of the season on Matchday 2 of Group D, but the Nerazzurri were perhaps fortunate to escape from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza with all three points.

Simone Inzaghi‘s side were beyond wasteful in the final third, and a Marcus Thuram strike in the second half eventually saw them go ahead after a number of missed opportunities in the first and second half, with Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez passing up huge chances.

In the end, though, Thuram’s goal was enough to seal the points, and they would have expected to put further gloss on the result but missed a number of later chances as well.

The result leaves Inter on four points from their opening two Champions League fixtures, level with Real Sociedad at the top of Group D. Salzburg are third on three points, and are Inter’s next opponents, with Benfica bottom and pointless.
