Inter director Piero Ausilio: “Arsenal’s Balogun is not the only attacking target, I do not care about Lukaku”

Inter director Piero Ausilio has spoken very frankly about the Romelu Lukaku situation and whether Arsenal's Folarin Balogun is the club's favoured choice to bolster the attack.

Inter director Piero Ausilio has insisted that the club will sign another striker before the 2023/24 Serie A campaign begins, with Romelu Lukaku unlikely to rejoin the Nerazzurri and Edin Dzeko also leaving this summer for Fenerbahce, after the veteran frontman’s contract expired.

Present alongside deputy Dario Baccin at the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy match between Monza and AC Milan at the U-Power Stadium, the 48-year-old was confident that they would supplement coach Simone Inzaghi’s squad with the firepower that could assist a Scudetto challenge, and have already secured Marcus Thuram.

Is Folarin Balogun Inter’s top target?

While rumours suggest that Inter are keeping a close eye on Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, Ausilio claimed that the club is looking at several targets and not one particular target.

“The next move in the transfer market is very simple,” Ausilio told Mediaset (via La Gazzetta dello Sport). “We will try to sign a player who scores goals and in case that cannot be achieved at this moment, we are working on several paths.

“We will try to look for the player who is more suited to the ideas of our coach and, above all, one who comes and scores goals, which are the basis of a striker’s work. Balogun is an option like any other. There is no first or second choice, there are opportunities. We will then make the choices later and we will make the right one.”

No way back for Romelu Lukaku at Inter

After Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku shunned a third spell with the Nerazzurri and started negotiating with bitter rivals Juventus, any route back to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza appears closed to the Belgian, despite firing them to the Scudetto in 2020/21.

“I am speaking about the Inter players and not those from other teams,” insisted Ausilio. “I don’t care about Lukaku and I say this with the utmost serenity. I’m happy with the team we have [at Inter] and the forwards we have.

“We will add another striker by the start of the season, I think, and these are the players who will do everything for the good of Inter and to help us win matches. The rest are things that don’t matter.”
