Inter’s injury woes lightening: Inzaghi handed boost as Bastoni and Pavard near return

After Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries picked up injuries during the 3-0 win over Napoli, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will be pleased to see Alessandro Bastoni and Benjamin Pavard nearing a return.

With Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries limping off the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona pitch in Inter‘s Serie A Matchday 14 win over Napoli, the news that fellow defenders Alessandro Bastoni and Benjamin Pavard have started light training will please Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.

After a 3-0 win over Napoli took Inter back to the top of the Serie A table, the players were enjoying their usual 24-hour post-match rest, but the defensive duo were keen to continue their recovery work and soon strengthen the team’s title chances.

When will Bastoni and Pavard return for Inter?

After picking up a calf injury whilst preparing for duty with the Italy Men’s National Team, La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Bastoni is the most likely to be available for selection first. The 24-year-old could even be in line to face Udinese on Matchday 15, providing that he returns to full training by Wednesday.

However, immediately replacing De Vrij in the Inter starting XI is probably a step too far for the returning Bastoni.

As for Pavard, though, with his injury more severe, it could be another two weeks before they see him pulling on the Inter jersey again. The Frenchman suffered a dislocated knee during the victory over Atalanta at the start of November and has been wearing a protective brace to assist his recovery. That brace has now been removed, but Pavard requires more shape and condition work than Bastoni.

How long could Inter be without De Vrij and Dumfries?

Netherlands defender De Vrij lasted just 15 minutes in Naples, which forced Inzaghi to risk wing-back Carlos Augusto in an unfamiliar role, and up against the formidable Victor Osimhen. As the former Lazio man left the pitch, he was clutching his thigh and complaining of an abductor strain, which will certainly see him miss the Serie A fixture with Udinese and their final Champions League group game with Real Sociedad.

A thigh issue also forced off countryman Dumfries just before the end of the game and will hamper his ability to rampage up and down the Nerazzurri right flank. However, Inter have more cover in this area and replacement Juan Cuadrado came off the bench to assist Marcus Thuram for the third goal against Napoli.

So, Inzaghi may not be sweating too much on the examinations that will take place to discover the severity of the injury.
