Inter turn attention away from Lukaku: Will they sign Morata, Taremi, En-Nesyri or Balogun?

With Inter throwing in the towel on Romelu Lukaku this summer, they are considering a number of options to come in and be their new striker, including former Juventus frontman Alvaro Morata and Arsenal's Folarin Balogun.

Romelu Lukaku and Inter‘s relationship appears to have reached a definitive end. The Belgian’s first stint at the club ended on a somewhat sour note as he returned to the Premier League in a big-money move to Chelsea after firing the Nerazzurri to their first Serie A title in a decade, but his second stint looks to have come to an even worse conclusion.

It had been made clear that Inter‘s priority for the summer transfer window was to find a way to bring Lukaku back to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for 2023/24 after his season-long loan deal from Stamford Bridge had ended, but the Nerazzurri have now thrown in the towel. Reports that Lukaku had been engaging in talks with Juventus, Inter’s most bitter rivals, were not well received by the Milanese club, who then opted to give up on the Belgian.

While the discussions themselves might have been considered problematic enough, the fact that they were held while Inter were preparing for the Champions League final made things all the worse, and made the pill too bitter for the club to swallow.

Inter had been the frontrunners to sign Lukaku this summer, and there were serious hopes that an agreement could be reached with the player and Chelsea to get it done on a permanent basis. Meetings had been planned, but breaking point was reached before things ever got off the ground.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are now considering other options and remain undecided on exactly what kind of profile of forward they are looking for. It appears as though they are torn between signing an experienced professional or taking something of a risk on a younger option.

Inter consider Morata, Taremi and En-Nesyri for experience

Alvaro Morata is a familiar face to fans of Italian football following his spells with Juventus, and he has been widely linked with returning to Italy this summer, with the fact that he met his Italian partner while playing in Turin a significant factor. AS Roma are thought to be keen in the Spaniard, while AC Milan are also considering a move for the Atletico Madrid frontman. Inter, too, value his experience and could table an offer.

At 30, Morata should still have plenty to offer to any side for a while to come, and Simone Inzaghi is thought to be a fan of his. As well, he has experience with Giuseppe Marotta from their shared time with Juventus

Should Inter look beyond Morata, then Mehdi Taremi and Youssef En-Nesyri are contenders to join. The former has impressed with Porto for a number of seasons now, and at 31 he’s not seen as too old an option. As AC Milan have learned, though, he would set any interested party back around €20 million.

En-Nesyri is another option. The Sevilla forward could be available due to the La Liga club’s need to sell, and Inter could use this to negotiate a reduced fee.

Inter are keen on Arsenal’s Balogun

Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun celebrates scoring for Reims (@Balogun)

Following an impressive season at Stade de Reims in France, Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun is a name on a number of European clubs’ radars. With the Ligue 1 side, he scored a more-than-respectable tally of 21 goals in 34 games.

It is recognised, though, that the 22-year-old still has growing to do, and his price tag is thought to be around €40 million, and a move would come with a little more risk due to his relative inexperience. There has also been some suggestion that the Nerazzurri could look to use Joaquin Correa in any potential deal to reduce the price requested by Arsenal
