Martial, Nzola, Taremi and the rest: Who are Inter’s attacking transfer targets this summer?

Inter are in need of attacking reinforcements this summer. From impossible options like Kylian Mbappe to low-cost possibilities like M'Bala Nzola, many names have been linked with an arrival. But who are their targets in this transfer window?

Inter have been linked with a plethora of strikers, and although there are some players whose names have been linked with multiple clubs around Europe, the Nerazzurri are also looking at players that might catch some people by surprise.

The Italian giants are reinforcing their attack after Edin Dzeko signed for Fenerbahce and their decision not to purchase Romelu Lukaku permanently from Chelsea. With Joaquin Correa expected to be sold, this leaves Inter with Lautaro Martinez and new signing Marcus Thuram in attack, and the club want to make a signing or two before the 2023/24 Serie A season commences.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri want to sign either Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, Italy international Gianluca Scamacca, or Porto centre-forward Mehdi Taremi, but difficulties in negotiating for those players have risen. This has prompted the Biscione to look at other options whose owners might not demand large transfer fees.

Who are Inter’s attacking transfer targets?

Anthony Martial – Manchester United

The 27-year-old has one year left on his contract with the Red Devils, but he has battled with injuries and he is not a prolific scorer. Martial scored just once in 12 appearances on loan to Sevilla in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign and he found the back of the net seven times in 26 competitive matches for Manchester United in 2022/23.

Although he is not a natural striker, the Frenchman was sometimes used as a lone striker in the 4-2-3-1 formation under Erik ten Hag at the Premier League club. Perhaps this has given Inter some ideas and they might believe that he could adapt to Simone Inzaghi’s system.

Beto – Udinese

Beto has been with Udinese for two seasons, scoring 11 Serie A goals in 2021/22 and 10 in 2022/23. The 25-year-old stands at 194 cm tall and he can use his physique to act as a targetman. Despite his experience in Italian football, the lack of prolific scoring for the Zebrette is likely to be a deterrent for Inter and they are probably going to look elsewhere.

M’Bala Nzola – Spezia

The Angola international has been in Italy since 2016, and he has made a slow and steady rising up the divisions. Nzola has been with Spezia since 2020, and he played a part in getting the Ligurian club into Serie A for the first time in their history. Despite scoring 13 goals in the 2022/23 Serie A season, he was not able to prevent the Aquilotti from losing the relegation play-off to Hellas Verona.

Now that the Ligurians are in Serie B, Inter could pounce on a potential bargain. However, he is likely to be a reserve option if they acquire Balogun from Arsenal and sell Joaquin Correa.

Inter’s Mister X

This mystery attacker could be a high-profile name or another obscure player. Although Inter directors Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio would prefer to purchase a striker that is affordable now and could be sold for a profit in the future, they could scrap that idea and target a big name.

Whilst the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are beyond the realms of reality for the Nerazzurri, there are several options in addition to those mentioned that could eventually be the focal point of attack under Inzaghi.
