Inter transfers: Dimarco targeted by Man Utd and Real Madrid, but can he excel away from Serie A?

Lots of Serie A's best stars are being linked with moves away, and Federico Dimarco is one of them. Manchester United and Real Madrid have been linked, but could Dimarco really produce the same form away from Inter?

You could make a very solid case for Federico Dimarco to be the most improved player in Serie A over the past two seasons. The Inter left-back is one of their most important players right now, despite there being a time when it seemed he may never make an impact for the first team.

It is his performances during the 2022/23 season that have really alerted some of the superpowers in football to his quality.

The likes of Lautaro Martinez, Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella have long been the Inter players most heavily linked with a move to a wealthier club, but Dimarco is now quite firmly in that bracket as well.

Man Utd and Real Madrid eye Dimarco

It’s been reported by The Independent (via La Gazzetta dello Sport) that two of the biggest clubs in the world have got a serious interest in signing Federico Dimarco.

It is the interest from Real Madrid that should be of the biggest concern to Inter, who have no interest in selling the 25-year-old. Los Blancos spent much of the 2022/23 campaign with Eduardo Camavinga playing at left-back as Ferland Mendy was suffering from a long-term injury.

There is scope for Dimarco to be the starting left-back at Real Madrid very quickly if he impressed early on, and that is not necessarily the case at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag is an admirer, but Luke Shaw is among the best left-backs in the world and Dimarco would have a job on his hands to start many games.

Is Dimarco ready to leave Inter?

Federico Dimarco is a bit of an enigma. He is a late bloomer who can often be mistaken for being younger than he is. It is only in the past two seasons, and particularly in the most recent campaign, that he has cemented himself as a first-team starter.

He has kept Robin Gosens out of the team which is impressive, and his attacking production is superb for a defender. He ended the season with six goals and 10 assists, and some of the goals were very good strikes.

The reason there is some doubt about whether he can produce this form elsewhere is that Dimarco has been owned by Inter for almost his entire career, barring one year where he actually belonged to FC Sion.

He is from Milan, and he is an Inter fan through and through. You can tell by the passion with which he plays the game. There is always a feeling in that situation that he might not be quite as good a player at another club in a new country.

It also wouldn’t be fair to say that he has outgrown Inter. He is one of Simone Inzaghi’s best players, but he is in a group of four or five key players. Having only signed a new contract a year and a half ago, and with Inter focusing on other sales, this sort of move may not get off the ground this summer unless Dimarco decides to force it.
