Inter transfers: Inzaghi wants to sign Sommer and a backup after Onana sale to Man Utd – the targets

Inter are close to securing Yann Sommer to replace Andre Onana, but are struggling to find a back-up after releasing Samir Handanovic.

Inter are set for wholesale changes in the goalkeeping department this season after selling Andre Onana to Premier League club Manchester United, and releasing Samir Handanovic at the expiration of his contract.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri appear to have settled on Bayern Munich veteran Yann Sommer as their first choice keeper, having identified the Switzerland international in January before he moved to the Bundesliga champions from Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, Inter remain in the market for a back-up to Sommer and need to secure a second goalkeeper after losing their two most senior options this summer, but a long-mooted move for Shakhtar Donetsk‘s Anatoliy Trubin is in danger of collapsing.

Trubin edges towards Benfica

Trubin is keen to leave the Ukrainian club and has committed himself to Inter, but the Nerazzurri have been put off by Shakhtar‘s transfer demands for a player who is out of contract in 2024.

Whilst he appears set on Inter, the Serie A club are at risk of missing out on the 22-year-old amidst strong interest from across Europe, with Benfica now considered the favourites to land him.

Indeed, Shakhtar have threatened to bench the Ukraine international if he does not agree a new deal or leave the club for a fee they are satisfied with, and so he may well edge towards a departure elsewhere. However, Inter remain in talks with Shakhtar and a deal is not completely off the table.

Bento remains an option

Whilst negotiations rage on, Inter are monitoring another option in Athletico Paranaense‘s Bento, and the 23-year-old could well prove to be a better fit for coach Simone Inzaghi thanks to his superior skill with the ball at his feet.

Trubin is considered a more physically imposing goalkeeper, but with Inzaghi keen to replace the excellent technique of Onana, Bento could slot in more smoothly.

Whilst Inter have a genuine interest in Bento and the Curitiba-native is keen on making the switch to Serie A, the Rubro-Negro have little interest in selling midway through the Brazilian season.

Athletico Paranaense are confident of overturning a 3-1 first-leg defeat to Bolivar in the Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores and want Bento available in the tournament, whilst the recent €60 million sale of striker Vitor Roque to Barcelona means there is no requirement to raise funds.

Stankovic stakes a claim

Alternatively, Inter are keeping tabs on Sassuolo veteran Andrea Consigli and Sampdoria‘s Emil Audero, with the latter the more likely option, whilst youngster Filip Stankovic has impressed in preseason.

The 21-year-old is the son of Nerazzurri icon Dejan, who won five Serie A titles and the Champions League as a midfielder for Inter between 2006 and 2010, and he is thought to be on the brink of breaking into first-team contention.

Despite this, it is felt that his development would be better suited playing regular football in the Primavera or out on loan, rather than earning a handful of minutes behind Sommer.
