Inter transfers: Scamacca joins Atalanta, leaving Inter to chase Arsenal’s Balogun and other targets

Inter were expecting to strike a deal with West Ham United for Gianluca Scamacca, but he is signing for Atalanta instead. That leaves them looking at other targets, and Arsenal's Folarin Balogun is top of the list.

Whilst Inter have been having a successful transfer window in many respects, their failed pursuits of both Romelu Lukaku and Gianluca Scamacca have resulted in them trying to strike a tough-looking deal with Arsenal for Folarin Balogun.

The original plan coming into the summer was always to secure the permanent transfer of Lukaku from Chelsea following his loan move. Finances and the player’s willingness to speak to Juventus led to Inter calling any potential deal off, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need more forwards.

Marcus Thuram has arrived, but Edin Dzeko and Lukaku are gone. That leaves Simone Inzaghi with his new French arrival, Lautaro Martinez, and Joaquin Correa, who he and the club seem desperate to sell.

It has been clear for a long time that Gianluca Scamacca will be leaving West Ham United after a disappointing season in the Premier League. The likes of Inter, AS Roma and Juventus were the teams linked most heavily, but Atalanta have taken advantage of their dawdling and secured the deal of €25m upfront, with €5m in add-ons and 10% of any future sale.

It is an incredibly similar deal to the last offer made by Inter, where they offered €25m and €4m in bonuses. Regardless, the deal was struck and Scamacca flew to Italy on Saturday to get his medical done. Given how similar the offers are, the suggestion is that Scamacca chose Atalanta over Inter.

There are other targets that Inter can pursue, but La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun is their favourite. The United States striker impressed on loan at Stade Reims last season where he scored 22 goals and got three assists in 39 games.

The issue is that Balogun would cost around €40m, which is more than West Ham were asking for when it came to Scamacca. Inzaghi will need to ask Steven Zhang for more investment than was initially planned if they are to get their man.

As per the same La Gazzetta dello Sport report, there are two other strikers that Inter could turn to if a deal for Balogun proves too expensive.

As has been the case all summer for every top Serie A club, Alvaro Morata‘s name is still floating about. He seems willing to leave Atletico Madrid should someone strike a deal with the Spanish side, but it also doesn’t seem like he or Atleti are going to force anything.

An option from within Serie A is Udinese‘s Beto. Thanks to the recent deal between Inter and the Friulians for Lazar Samardzic, there is already an open dialogue between the clubs and that could help. Beto is viewed as the first alternative to Balogun.
