Inter’s desire for more goals reignites interest in Porto’s Taremi: Is the Iranian likely to join the Nerazzurri?

Simone Inzaghi wants more goals from all areas of his Inter team to reduce their reliance on Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. But, to add more options in attack, the Nerazzurri are looking at Mehdi Taremi with a view to a winter move.

Since Frenchman Marcus Thuram joined Inter during the summer transfer window, the 25-year-old forward has managed to hit the ground running fairly quickly alongside Lautaro Martinez up top.

Despite Thuram enjoying an excellent start to life back in the country of his birth, veteran forwards Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez have been unable to have a significant impact in the final third of the pitch upon their return to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. With coach Simone Inzaghi‘s patience running thin as a result of a lack of goals produced outside of his two starting strikers, the coach is keen on entering the pursuit for Porto‘s Mehdi Taremi in the upcoming January transfer window.

Inzaghi losing faith quickly in Alexis Sanchez and others

After parting ways with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in order to join Inter on a free transfer and sign a long-term deal with the Neazzurri, Thuram wasted no time in making his mark. So far, Thuram has been combining well with strike partner and skipper Lautaro Martinez in fine fashion and is causing havoc with his blistering pace and remarkable technical ability.

So far in the 2023/24 Serie A season, the French international amassed two goals and five assists in eight appearances so far, making himself the top assist-maker in the Italian top flight, portraying his capability of being a well-rounded forward.

On the other hand, both Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez have been unable to be efficient in-front of goal since returning to Inter from Bologna and Marseille respectively. The two forwards combined have only attained a single assist since the start of this year’s campaign. It should be noted that Arnautovic suffered an injury shortly after returning to the club.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reveals that Inter are eager to acquire Mehdi Taremi in the winter transfer window in order to bolster the attack as Simone Inzaghi‘s confidence in the pair of experienced forwards is beginning to diminish.

Why do Inter and Simone Inzaghi want Porto’s Mehdi Taremi?

Taremi was top goalscorer in the 2022/23 Liga Portugal season, bagging 22 goals and adding seven assists in 33 games played. The Iran forward’s ruthlessness and instincts in front of goal, in combination with his immense strength, intrigues Inzaghi greatly, making him view Taremi as the ideal striker to solve the shortage of goals in his squad.

As it stands, Mehdi Taremi‘s contract with Porto is set to expire in the summer of 2024, potentially making it possible for Inter to acquire his services for a relatively low fee in the January window.

Taremi is seemingly open to a potential departure from the Estadio do Dragao as the marksman was very close to joining Inter‘s cross-city rivals AC Milan during the summer market, but the deal ultimately fell through.

Inter have also identified Chelsea‘s Armando Broja as an alternative signing in attack if they are unable to seal a deal Mehdi Taremi over the course of the next couple of months.
