Inzaghi & Lautaro pre-Champions League final press conference: “Inter need personality, heart and desire to upset the odds”

Lautaro Martinez and Simone Inzaghi are clear about what Inter need to do if they are to come out on top of Manchester City in the Champions League final.

ATATURK OLYMPIC STADIUM (Istanbul) Lautaro Martinez urged his Inter teammates to show all their “personality, heart and desire to lift more trophies” as yhey gear up to face Manchester City in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

The Argentinian spoke alongside Matteo Darmian and Hakan Calhanoglu, before coach Simone Inzaghi also took part in the pre-match press conference, for which Total Italian Football was present, ahead of the Nerazzurri’s final, and biggest, game of the season.

After winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina last December, Lautaro will now have a chance to take part in the final of the biggest club competition in the world and he believes his side “need to be ready to take this final step and play such a special game for the Inter world”.

Similarities with the World Cup final

“The World Cup and the Champions League finals are the two most important games a player can be part of,” Lautaro said. “The feelings are the same and it is our work as a team throughout the season which led us here”.

“We know that Manchester City are a really tough side to play against, but we’re ready to fight back, we just need to bring our preparation onto the pitch,” Lautaro claimed.

“Of course, the personality has to be there. Then, as we always say, we must put our heart into it. Lastly, we need to show all our desire to win trophies, as we’ve been showing in recent seasons. We have the chance to add one more piece of silverware, so I ask my teammates to play with our heads held high”.

Inzaghi’s pre-Champions League final thoughts

Similarly, coach Simone Inzaghi mentioned “legs, mind and heart” as the keys to the game against the Premier League champions in Istanbul.

“Midfield will be very important tomorrow, but legs, mind and heart will also be crucial,” Inzaghi said.

“We’ll need to be ready to make that extra run when needed, we’ll have to stay switched on in every moment of the game and the heart will help us to find the energy we don’t even know we have.”

Inzaghi also praised his Inter players for the way they were able to “grow through the difficult times” this season.

“We know which kind of game we need to play tomorrow – Manchester City are the best team in the world but we’re aware of our path, we’re proud to be here and we’ll give everything to limit our mistakes,” Inzaghi claimed.

“We’ve gone through difficult times, we’ve lost games both deservedly and undeservedly, but the players deserve credit for how they stuck together and created a strong team spirit. We’ve put so much effort and this is what has taken us here”.

Inzaghi also added that they “prepared something to limit Erling Haaland” but, although he’s considered “one of the main threats”, Inter will have “to defend well as a team”.
