The Italy Men’s National Team secured their passage into the knockout stages of the 2024 European Championship after snatching a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Croatia to seal second place in Group B on Monday.

The Azzurri looked destined for third-place and a nervous wait to find out if they would progress, only for Mattia Zaccagni to curl home with almost the last kick of the game to move Luciano Spalletti‘s side onto four points.

Italy will now face Switzerland in the Last 16 in Berlin on Saturday, whilst Croatia are all but eliminated after ending the group stage with just two points.

A tense first half saw Italy edge proceedings but fail to break the deadlock, with Alessandro Bastoni coming closest with a towering header that forced a fine save from Dominik Livakovic.

However, the match burst into life early in the second half when substitute Davide Frattesi handled in the box and Luka Modric stepped up to take the penalty, only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to pull off a magnificent save.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper produced another excellent stop moments later but could not deny Modric from the rebound, as the veteran turned home.

Just as the Azzurri were staring defeat in the face, substitute Zaccagni stepped off the bench to curl in a magnificent effort and draw Italy level deep into stoppage time.

Italy Player of the Match – Gianluigi Donnarumma

Having been Italy‘s best player against Spain, Donnarumma impressed once again with a wonderful save from Luka Modric‘s penalty, and was unfortunate to see the Real Madrid midfielder net minutes later.

Donnarumma had pulled off an equally impressive stop in the build up to the Modric goal, showing stunning reflexes to palm away.

Ultimately, the former AC Milan goalkeeper has put to bed the debate as to whether he should retain his place over Guglielmo Vicario.
