Nothing is certain yet for the Italy Men’s National Team at the 2024 European Championship. Having beaten Albania and lost to Spain and ahead of their final Group B fixture against Croatia, anything can still happen for the Azzurri, whether it’s progressing in second, in third, or finishing bottom and going home early.

Even Sunday evening’s Group A matches were being watched with a keen eye in Italy. Until the 90th minute in SwitzerlandGermany, many Italian fans were fearing the worst.

Switzerland leading through Bologna‘s Dan Ndoye had the Azzurri facing a situation they really didn’t want to have to deal with.

A win for the Swiss would have left Germany advancing in second from Group A, meaning they would await Italy in the Round of 16 should the Azzurri go on to advance in second place themselves. But Niclas Fullkrug‘s late goal saw the hosts finish top, and so a second-place finish in Group B for Italy will see them face neighbours Switzerland in the first knockout round.

There is, though, work to be done before anybody can afford to think about that. As detailed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are still a lot of possibilities that Italy could face at Euro 2024.

Who will Italy play if they reach the Euro 2024 Round of 16?

If Italy manage to finish second in Group B – which they will do by avoiding defeat against Croatiathey will play Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Albania will not be able to overtake the Azzurri in the event of a draw with Croatia.

Although the prospect of facing Switzerland is a lot better than the idea of meeting Germany so early in the tournament, it should be remembered that it was Switzerland who prevented Italy from going to the 2022 World Cup, finishing above the Azzurri in their qualification group and condemning them to a playoff.

Should that be the case, Italy could come up against Denmark or England in the quarter-finals, although that’s still a long way away for now.

What if Italy finish third?

If Italy lose to Croatia, they will likely finish third in Group B, putting them in an uncomfortable position. A loss could even see them finish bottom of the group if Albania manage to beat Spain

Should the Azzurri finish third, they will do so with three points, leaving them waiting for the other groups to play out to know if they are among the best four third-placed teams.

Hungary have already secured a third-place finish in Group A with a goal difference of -3, so Italy will be sure of being placed above them unless they lose by three goals or more to Croatia.

If Italy finish third, there are two possibilities that await them in the Round of 16. The worst of those is a date with Portugal in Frankfurt on July 1, who have already won Group F with a game to spare.

The other possibility for Italy is that they will take on the winners of Group E in Munich on July 2. The Group E winners will be any of Romania, Belgium, Slovakia or Ukraine – all tied on three points each after Matchday 2.

So anything is still possible for Italy at Euro 2024, from finishing second in Group B and taking on Switzerland, to finishing bottom of the group and packing their bags earlier than anybody would have expected.
