CONFIRMED: Italy drawn in Euro 2024 Group B – Who do they play and when?

Italy have been drawn in one of the toughest groups at Euro 2024 with Group B consisting of Spain, Croatia, and Albania.

The draw for the 2024 European Championship took place in Hamburg, Germany on Saturday evening, and the Italy Men’s National Team were drawn with Spain, Croatia, and Albania in Group B.

Despite Roberto Mancini stepping down during the qualifiers to take the Saudi Arabia post, his replacement Luciano Spalletti secured qualification for the Italians, and the Azzurri finished second and six points behind Group C winners England.

Coming into this tournament as reigning European champions, Italy have produced some dismal results since their triumph against The Three Lions at Wembley Stadium in July 2021, and they were placed in Pot 4 prior to the Euro 2024 draw.

Italy drawn in identical group to Euro 2012

Coincidentally, Italy have been drawn in a group that is similar to the one they featured in at Euro 2012, when they eventually lost the final 4-0 to Spain. Like in that tournament, the Azzurri will face La Furia Roja, and Croatia, but they will play against Albania this time instead of the Republic of Ireland.

The Azzurri will commence their tournament against Albania on June 15 in Dortmund, then face Spain in Gelsenkirchen five days later. Their group stage will conclude on June 24 in Leipzig when they face the Vatreni.

Italy recent record against opponents

Italy were eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Nations League in 2021 and 2023, losing 2-1 on both occasions. However, the Azzurri defeated La Furia Roja at the last two European Championships. The Italians won 2-0 in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016 and triumphed 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Albania and Italy faced each other in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with the Azzurri winning 2-0 at home and 1-0 away. Their most recent encounter was in November 2022 in a friendly, which the Italians won 3-1.

Unfortunately, Croatia have been a bogey team for Italy since their split from Yugoslavia in 1991. Despite the Azzurri boasting legends like Paolo Maldini and Roberto Baggio, Croatia emerged with a 2-1 victory in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Palermo. These sides last played one another for the Euro 2016 qualifiers, drawing 1-1 both times.
