Italy were knocked out of the Women's World Cup by South Africa after they twice failed to build on a position of strength, meaning their time in New Zealand must be viewed as a disappointment.

The Italy Women’s National Team were defeated 3-2 against South Africa on Wednesday morning CEST at the Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, in their final Group G match at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The Azzurre had a difficult evening against the South Africans, displaying their share of defensive frailties and lacking fluidity in attack.

Bayana Bayana attacked with pace and directness, whereas the Italians looked slow and confused. Italy were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup after this defeat, whilst South Africa joined Sweden in the Round of 16.

The Juventus Women’s midfielder struggled to impress in the previous two matches, but she almost made the difference against South Africa, finding the back of the net twice.

Chiara Beccari was fouled in the penalty area early in the match, and Caruso converted the spot-kick. In the second half, substitute Cristiana Girelli deflected a corner towards Caruso, and the midfield got a faint touch before the ball went into the net.

Despite her efforts, she was replaced by AS Roma midfielder Giada Greggi later in the game and Italy squandered their chance to qualify from Group G.
