Italy player ratings vs Sweden: Only Cantore provides glimpses of spark in humiliating defeat

Italy were humiliated by Sweden in their second Group G game at the Women's World Cup, and only Sofia Cantore showed any signs of positivity of those who started.

The Italy Women’s National Team were thrashed 5-0 by Sweden on Saturday morning CEST at the Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, in their second Group G match at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The Azzurre still have a good chance of advancing to the knockout rounds.

The Swedes showed no mercy on the Italians, displaying their supremacy at corners and three of their goals came from deliveries towards the near post. This result sealed qualification to the Round of 16 for Sweden while Italy are second after Argentina and South Africa drew 2-2 the day before.

Italy posed a threat in the earlier stages of the game and the Juventus Women forward had a couple of chances earlier on, forcing a save out of Sweden goalkeeper Zecira Musovic with one effort. After the Swedes got into the game, Cantore did not get as many touches on the ball as she did early on, but she did pose more of an attacking threat than her teammates when she got the ball.

The Azzurre attack often looked disjointed and it was clear that most of her teammates were playing out of their comfort zones, especially captain Barbara Bonansea, who played on the left-wing instead of a more central role.
