Juventus have endured a turbulent 12 months off the pitch, and now young midfielder Nicolo Fagioli is under investigation for potentially betting on football matches.
The 22-year-old is one of the brightest prospects in Italian football, scoring three goals and supplying four assists in 26 matches for the Bianconeri throughout the 2022/23 Serie A season, but he is in a situation that could hinder his career.
First reported by La Stampa, Fagioli could be banned from playing football and receive a fine if he is found guilty of betting on illegal platforms. The Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into a betting ring on online platforms, and the police mobile squad have supposedly traced the Juventus midfielder to it.
Fagioli allegedly in breach of Article 24
Public prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta has a dossier on the investigation, and it must be clarified as to whether Fagioli did place bets or not, and what exactly he bet on.
Although gambling is not illegal in Italy, sports people have different rules. Regardless of whether they are athletes, coaches or executives, they are not allowed to place bets on the respective sport that they are involved in.
Article 24 of the Code of Sports Justice states that it prohibits “the subjects of the federal system, managers, members, and members of clubs belonging to the professional sector from making or accepting bets, directly or indirectly, even from persons authorised to receive them, which have as their object results relating to official matches organised within the framework of the FIGC, FIFA, and UEFA.”
Fagioli could be banned for three years
After a report was sent by Fagioli’s lawyers on August 30, the FIGC Prosecutor’s Office is now aware of the proceedings, and the prosecutor Giuseppe Chine is following the development of the investigation closely. If there is a violation of Article 24 of the sporting code, the Juventus midfielder would be suspended for at least three years, and he could also be fined €25,000 or more.
In sporting terms, it would be a real shame if he has been breaking rules and is found guilty. He has established himself in the Juventus team after spending the 2021/22 Serie B season on loan at Cremonese, and he has earned one cap for the Italy Men’s National Team.
If Fagioli receives a three-year ban for betting, he would be 25 years old when he returns. Regardless of how his career pans out afterwards, one can only wonder how a disqualification would affect his development as a footballer.
