Juventus transfers: Allegri wants Barcelona’s Kessie to make Serie A return

Franck Kessie was a crucial player at AC Milan but he opted for a free transfer to Barcelona in 2022. Now, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri wants to bring him back to Italy.

As the 2023 summer transfer window continues to heat up, top Serie A sides such as Juventus continue to evaluate the potential moves that may catapult them towards a Scudetto charge, and the name of Franck Kessie has been bounced around a lot.

For Juventus, they continue to be limited in terms of budget. However, signings this summer are still a possibility, with a former AC Milan star now on their radar. They have already added Timothy Weah to the fray, but fans know they need much more than that to make 2023/24 a more successful season.

More importantly, Massimiliano Allegri knows it as well and he wants tried and tested Serie A quality in his team.

Kessie Out Of Favour at Barcelona

It was only last summer when Franck Kessie swapped Italy for Spain and joined Barcelona upon the expiry of his contract at the San Siro.

At the time, the moved look like a great pick-up by coach Xavi Hernandez. No transfer fee was required and a verbal agreement was struck towards the end of March of 2022.

Despite such swift negotiations, the Ivorian’s time with the Blaugrana has gone much less smoothly. The 26-year-old made 43 appearances across all competitions over the course of last season, but his number of minutes played tells the real story.

Kessie played 1797 minutes for Barcelona in 2022/23, averaging 42 minutes per game. His only special moment came with a late winner against Real Madrid at Camp Nou, a victory that effectively sealed the La Liga title.

Xavi considers Kessie redundant at the club, hence why he spent so much time on the sidelines. The midfielder has the desire to win the trust of both Xavi and the club, but it seems time is not on his side.

A Signing That Makes Sense For Juve

The initial midfield target for The Old Lady was Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, however, like other European talents, the former Lazio man opted to move to Saudi Arabia, joining Al Hilal this summer window. Juventus are now forced to turn their attention elsewhere, and are now seriously thinking about bringing Kessie back to Italy.

With Juventus facing financial losses of €120 million this season, a loan deal is favouribale to a purchase. Leandro Paredes’s loan recently expired, meaning the Argentine will head back to Paris Saint-Germain. Kessie would essentially eat up the same amount of the wage budget that Parades did last season which was €6.5m, meaning the deal would not conflict with Juventus’ budget.

Should they land the 26-year-old on loan this summer, Allegri plans to deploy Kessie in front of the back line, taking up a deep position in midfield, with Manuel Locatelli, Nicolo Fagioli and Nicolo Rovella playing ahead of him and taking care of progressing the ball.

Should Kessie Have Ever Left Italy?

There is a lure around a move to Barcelona that players just can not escape, despite the a very tough handful of years on and off the pitch. The likes of Kessie, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Joules Kounde all moved to Barcelona in 2022, so the club’s pull factor may never be damaged.

However, in hindsight, Kessie left an improving AC Milan that had just become Serie A champions with him at the centre of the project and was beginning to make a stamp in Europe.

He may now join Juventus, who finished seventh in last year’s standings and will not compete in the Champions League, making it arguable that the Ivorian has ultimately taken a step backwards.
