Kim Min-jae: Bayern Munich move ahead of Manchester United in race for Napoli defender

After helping Napoli win the Serie A title, defender Kim Min-jae is high in demand and Bayern Munich are determined to hold off interest from Manchester United for him this summer.

The battle to sign Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae is set to intensify, with Bayern Munich stepping up their efforts to land him and challenge Manchester United for the South Korea international.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bundesliga champions Bayern have stepped up their efforts to convince Kim to make the switch to Germany, despite the Red Devils being in advanced negotiations.

With Thomas Tuchel‘s side in the market for a new centre-back, they have identified Kim as a top target and could now be the South Korean’s most likely destination.

Bayern Munich determined to land Kim

Manchester United had hoped to tie up a move for Kim as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season, but must fight off interest from Die Roten after the Bavarian club increased their wage proposal.

Indeed, it has been suggested that Bayern Munich‘s more favourable terms have now put them in the driving seat in the race to secure Kim this summer, and his future may now lie in the Bundesliga.

It has been felt for some time that Kim will leave Napoli this summer after establishing himself as a keystone in their Serie A title-winning season, with the Partenopei all but accepting that they will have to do without him going forward.

Kim’s release clause makes exit likely

The 26-year-old has a release clause in his contract that is valid from July 1 until July 15 and is dependent on the annual turnover of the buying club, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich expected to have to pay around €60 million to secure him.

Such a deal would represent a huge profit on the €18m Napoli stumped up to sign Kim from Fenerbahce last summer, whilst the player himself would see his wages rise from €2.5m per season to €7m.

Kim was brought in as a replacement for Chelsea-bound Kalidou Koulibaly and proved to be an astute signing, making 35 league appearances as Napoli won a first scudetto since 1990.
