Leao and Pulisic lead Europe’s goal contribution charts: Will they fire AC Milan to the Serie A title?

AC Milan are leading the way in Serie A this season, and that's in no small part down to Rafael Leao and new boy Christian Pulisic. The wide combo are leading Europe's goal contribution charts so far this term, firing the Rossoneri to the top of the table.

AC Milan have had a mostly bright start to the 2023/24 Serie A season, if the humiliation of the Derby della Madonnina against Inter can be overlooked. The Rossoneri set their targets high after a disappointing season and attempt to defend their title last year, and Stefano Pioli‘s side are showing their intent to fulfill expectations already.

After eight Serie A Matchdays, AC Milan are setting the pace for the chasing pack, holding a two-point lead over the Nerrazzurri. Curiously, it is against their neighbours and closest chasers that their only defeat this season, domestically and in Europe, has come.

Pioli‘s side have scored the fourth most goals in Serie A – 16 goals so far – and they have managed to find the net in every single one of their domestic fixtures to date, while not managing a single goal yet in the Champions League.

Leao and Pulisic vital for AC Milan

The main contributors to the success AC Milan are enjoying so far this season are Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic – the pair have been responsible for 11 of their 16 Serie A goals this season.

Not only does this lead Serie A figures for winger involvement, but also Europe’s. The closest to matching the pair are Napoli‘s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Matteo Politano and Sassuolo‘s Armand Lauriente and Domenico Berardi. Both the Partenopei and Nerovedi partnerships are responsible for eight goals.

In Europe, no one is currently bettering Leao and Pulisic. The only duo who match this record are English Premier League side Liverpool‘s Luis Diaz and former AS Roma man – Mohamed Salah

AC Milan’s wingers could be the key to reclaiming the Scudetto

So far, Rafa Leao has contributed to six goals, featuring three times on the scoresheet and assisting three more. With the Portuguese star targeting 20 goals this season, this is a great start. It’s also worth noting that he has featured from the bench twice and is averaging 70 minutes per game.

On the other hand, Pulisic has scored four times, assisting once. Much like Leao, he hasn’t played every minute of the campaign which means his output could rise further with more minutes.

In addition, new signings Samuel Chukwueze and Noah Okafor add danger from the bench, even if they are yet to contribute similar numbers this early into their Rossoneri careers.

The four offer great dynamism and threat, and above all goals, which will only benefit AC Milan’s chances of reclaiming the scudetto.
