Manchester City win the 2022/23 Champions League

It's heartbreak for Inter in Istanbul as Rodri's winning goal sees Manchester City win the Champions League for the very first time.

Manchester City have won the 2022/23 Champions League by Serie A side Inter 1-0 in the final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

The clash on Saturday night saw very few clear-cut chances for either side but Simone Inzaghi’s team were able to stay in the context for much longer than many had predicted, given the frightening quality of the Man City side.

Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland had the best chances for Man City whilst Inter had some positive openings that never quite came to clear opportunities. The deadlock was then broken in the 68th minute as Rodri fired a loose ball through the bodies into the back of the net.

Inter show heart but can’t beat Man City

Inter will be pleased with their performance overall considering so many assumed they could be on the end of a heavy defeat. Man City have now won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League, something that has only been done by an English side once before.

Immediately after the winning goal from Rodri, Federico Dimarco saw a header bounce back off the bar before his second header hit the legs of Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian striker was in the thick of the action again late in the 90 minutes as his header from close range was incredibly saved by Ederson Moraes.

The result means that Inter have ended the season as Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana champions, having also finished third in Serie A and reached the Champions League final.
