Men’s Serie A 2023/24 Team of the Season

Champions Inter and this season's revelation Bologna dominate the 2023/24 Men's Serie A Team of the Season.

The 2023/24 Men’s Serie A season came to an end with Inter winning their second scudetto in four years. It was their first under the guidance of Simone Inzaghi, and the Nerazzurri have the greatest presence here with four players in Total Italian Football’s Team of the Season.

Bologna were the revelation of the season, finishing fifth and qualifying for the Champions League, 60 years since they qualified for the 1964/65 European Cup. The Rossoblu have three players in the team while Atalanta, Juventus, Torino, and Genoa have a player each representing them.

Below, then, is the Men’s Serie A Team of the Season for 2023/24, as per Total Italian Football.

Serie A 2023/24 Team of the Season

The Total Italian Football Men’s Serie A Team of the Season for 2023/24.

Yann Sommer – Inter

The Swiss goalkeeper joined from German giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 to replace Andre Onana, who was sold to Manchester United. Although Inter had a solid defence in the 2023/24 season, Sommer was alert whenever the Nerazzurri defence was breached. In 34 Serie A appearances, he conceded just 19 goals and kept 19 clean sheets.

Danilo – Juventus

It should not come as a surprise that a defender would thrive in a defensive team like Juventus under Massimiliano Allegri as coach, and the Brazilian veteran Danilo marshalled the defence admirably. The 32-year-old displayed great awareness and organisation in the Bianconeri defence, and he formed a great understanding with compatriot Gleison Bremer.

Riccardo Calafiori – Bologna

A key component in the Bologna team under Thiago Motta, Calafiori displayed great defensive awareness as well as elegant distribution from the back. The 22-year-old started his career as a left-winger, then switched to left-back. Under Motta, he operated as a ball-playing centre-back, and his performances with the Rossoblu earned him selection for the Italy Men’s National Team at the 2024 European Championship.

Alessandro Buongiorno – Torino

Despite boasting a paltry attack that scored just 36 goals in 38 Serie A matches, Torino were a team that we hard to break down defensively. They had the fourth-best defence, conceding just 36 times, and Buongiorno was one of the main reasons for that defensive prowess. A solid performer at the back, he also contributed with three goals.

Federico Dimarco – Inter

Impressing on the left flank with his pace, crossing ability, and powerful shooting, Dimarco was one of the reasons that Inter were such a potent threat on the counter-attack. The 26-year-old scored five goals and supplied six assists in 30 Serie A matches, but nothing could top his outrageous lob in the 2-0 win at home to Frosinone.

Lewis Ferguson – Bologna

If you pin his contribution down to statistics, then they do not do enough justice to the contribution that Ferguson made for Bologna in 2023/24. The Scotsman scored six goals and supplied four assists, but his positional play and intelligent passing were crucial to making Thiago Motta’s philosophy work. A serious injury cut his season short and he would have been representing Scotland at Euro 2024 if he was fit.

Hakan Calhanoglu – Inter

After struggling for consistency during his time with AC Milan, Calhanoglu has had his career transformed at Inter. Operating as a deep-lying playmaker, the Turkish international would easily complete over 100 passes per game and sustain high passing rates. He would also offer protection in front of the defence and also contribute with goals. Calhanoglu regularly displayed his calmness from the penalty spot, which was the source for the majority of his 13 goals.

Teun Koopmeiners – Atalanta

It was one of the greatest seasons in the history of La Dea, finishing fourth in Serie A, winning the Europa League, and qualifying for the Champions League. Koopmeiners demonstrated that he is one of the most complete midfielders playing in Italy with his energetic running, effective passing, and ability to get into goalscoring positions. The Dutchman scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 34 Serie A matches.

Joshua Zirkzee – Bologna

Although he is built like a traditional centre-forward, Zirkzee certainly did not operate like one. The Dutchman scored 11 goals throughout the 2023/24 Serie A season, but his passing and movement were important to Bologna. Not content with staying in the opposition penalty area, Zirkzee would drift to the flanks or drop into the midfield when needed, providing great link-up play with his teammates.

Lautaro Martinez – Inter

Finishing the season with 24 goals and finishing as the Serie A leading goalscorer, or capocannoniere, Lautaro lead by example for Inter. Although he had a barren patch towards the end of the season, the Nerazzurri captain laid the foundations for the scudetto with his goals for the majority of the campaign. His four goals against poor Salernitana on Matchday 7 after coming off the bench was undoubtedly the cameo of the season.

Albert Gudmundsson – Genoa

The Icelandic winger was one of the reasons Genoa earned promotion from Serie B in 2022/23, and he was integral in the Rossoblu earning a comfortable midtable finish in the 2023/24 Serie A campaign. He found the back of the net 14 times with only four other players in Serie A scoring more than him.
