Who has scored the most goals in a single Serie A season?

Some wonderful goalscorers have graced Serie A over the years, but which of them has managed to score the most goals in a single Italian top flight campaign?

-

Serie A has seen some truly wonderful strikers grace its pitches over the years, and there is a superb crop of talent currently in the Italian top flight. There is a record that the likes of Victor Osimhen, Lautaro Martinez, Dusan Vlahovic and more would love to break, and that is the most goals in a single Serie A season.

It is a big enough honour to win the Capocannoniere at the end of any given campaign, having it confirmed that you are the best striker in the land, but it is even better to know that nobody in history has scored as many times as you in one season.

So on that note, who has scored the most goals in a single season of Serie A football and who did they play for?

A shared record for superb stars

As it turns out, there are actually two players who share this award. It could be stretched to three if you tweak the wording slightly. Starting with the dubious entry, Gino Rossetti scored 36 goals for Torino in the 1928/29 season, which was one year before the first Serie A season as we know it today with a round-robin system.

The two other players to have reached this figure in one Serie A season are Ciro Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain. The latter did it first, scoring 36 goals for Napoli in the 2015/16 season.

The Argentina star was absolutely ruthless for the Partenopei that season, although his form was confined to Serie A. He only scored twice in the Europa League and did not score in the Coppa Italia.

Most recently, Immobile had a ridiculous season as he also netted 36 goals in the 2019/20 campaign. He got one more goal than Higuain overall as he grabbed two in the Europa League and one in the Coppa.

Which other players have the highest Serie A goal tallies?

As it turns out, the charts for players with the most goals in a single Italian top-flight season are dominated by names from the distant past. That reputation that Italy gained for having the strongest defences in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s did not appear for no reason.

There are some very big patches of time where nobody was able to take a meaningful place on the leaderboard, further showing how incredible Higuain and Immobile were in 2015/16 and 2019/20 respectively.

Which of Serie A’s current strikers have come closest to breaking the record?

There are some very good strikers playing in Serie A right now who, whilst some are struggling at this exact moment, have had great individual seasons.

Clearly, none of them other than Immobile have had a good enough season to make it onto the list above, but this list will show who is a contender to manage it in the near future. That is if they are not sold first. The list also exhibits just how impressive the above goal tallies were.
