Mourinho wants Morata at AS Roma: Can the Giallorossi beat their Serie A rivals to his signature?

It seems hard to imagine Alvaro Morata not returning to Serie A this summer as AS Roma and three other big teams are being linked with a move for the Spaniard.

AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho wants Alvaro Morata to join from Atletico Madrid as the Giallorossi try to resolve their lack of goalscoring options at the club.

The 30-year-old is no stranger to Serie A, having played for Juventus from 2014 until 2016 and again from 2020 to 2022. His experience is arguably more valuable than ever, given a few of Italy’s biggest clubs want the Spain international to return to Serie A.

According to Corriere dello Sport, (via Calciomercato), Mourinho has identified Morata as the forward to resolve AS Roma‘s goalscoring problems, but Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter are also interested so the Giallorossi must act swiftly.

Morata’s agent, Juanma Lopez, is in Rome to meet with AS Roma general manager Tiago Pinto to clarify the details of the transfer.

The Giallorossi are offering a four-year contract worth €4.5 million per season plus €500,000 in bonuses, but the main issue is agreeing on the transfer fee with Atletico Madrid. The entourage of the Spanish striker want the deal to go through for €12m, but Los Colchoneros are asking for €25m.

AS Roma want to sign Morata on loan and then have an option to buy him outright. However, they might sell Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez to further facilitate the acquisition of the 30-year-old.

Morata has experience, if not the prolific scoring rate

Morata has never been known to be a prolific scorer throughout his career. The most he scored in a Serie A campaign was 11 in 2020/21 with Juventus, whereas the most he has scored in any league was in 2016/17, when he scored 15 goals in La Liga for Real Madrid.

His experience in Italian football should allow him to adapt to the conservative tactics of Mourinho, but he needs to prove that he is an improvement on what they already have upfront. Tammy Abraham scored just eight goals in Serie A whereas Andrea Belotti failed to score in the league in 2022/23. Morata needs to better those tallies.
