Who is Napoli’s record goalscorer?

From Diego Maradona in the past to Victor Osimhen and co. today, Napoli's history is filled with incredible attacking talent. But who are their top 10 goalscorers of all time?

-

That it took Napoli six decades to be recognised as a major power in Italian football, winning the 1986/87 and 1989/90 Serie A titles, and then waiting another 33 years to rise to the top once more, is reflected in the recency of the players leading their all-time record goals charts.

Apart from Attila Sallustro and Antonio Vojak, who played for the Partenopei shortly after their formation in 1926, and ex-AC Milan goalscoring legend Jose Altafini during the mid-1960s, the entire list is made up of players who appeared since the 1980s when that first Scudetto was secured.

In particular, the relative success of Napoli since the turn of the millennium has seen historical names, like Giuseppe Savoldi, Luis Vinicio and Cane pushed out of the top 10, and Victor Osimhen 29 goals from breaking into that illustrious list.

Who is Napoli’s highest-ever goalscorer?

The name at the top of the Napoli all-time scorers list, Dries Mertens, might surprise those unfamiliar with the Belgian international’s transformation from wide attacker to central striker, in the wake of Gonzalo Higuain’s move to Juventus in 2016/17.

Ahead of moving to Naples in the summer of 2013, the attacker had scored an impressive 45 goals in two seasons with PSV Eindhoven, but only registering double figures once in his first three seasons in Italy partly highlighted the step up in quality Serie A provided.

However, Mertens netted 34 times during the 2017/18 season and made himself irreplaceable in the eyes of several Partenopei coaches, and left the club in 2022 with 148 goals in all competitions, and notably surpassing the legendary Diego Maradona.

De Laurentiis influence on Napoli’s all-time Top 10

Few people can argue that Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has not had a major impact on the club since taking over post-bankruptcy in 2004. The club has regularly qualified for the Champions League, won three Coppa Italias and they were crowned champions in 2022/23.

The impact his signings have had on the club’s all-time goalscoring list is also significant, though, with several of the shrewd purchases made by the 74-year-old highlighting recent challenges for major prizes both at home and abroad.

Behind Mertens, Marek Hamsik sits third with 121 goals, Edinson Cavani hit an impressive 104 goals in three seasons and is sixth in the standings, while Gonzalo Higuain is 10th with 91 goals. Even homegrown talent Lorenzo Insigne, who is second with one strike ahead of Hamsik, broke through during De Laurentiis’ tenure.
