Official: AS Roma announce Houssem Aouar signing: What does he bring to Jose Mourinho’s side?

AS Roma have officially announced the signing of Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar, their first piece of business this summer. What will he add to the team for Jose Mourinho?

AS Roma have officially announced their first signing of the summer transfer window by confirming that Houssem Aouar has joined on a free transfer from Olympique Lyonnais.

The Algerian midfielder has long been linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 side with teams such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United seemingly coming close to signing him over the years.

With Georginio Wijnaldum set to depart Roma and head back to Paris Saint-Germain, he will be a very welcome reinforcement for the Giallorossi.

Aouar discusses move to AS Roma

Up until recently, Houssem Aouar was a French international but he has since switched allegiance to Algeria. He appears very committed to the Roma project given the club have confirmed it is a five-year deal. He will wear the no.22 shirt.

At just 24 years old, Aouar has got a lot of time in both his career and his Roma contract to show why he was so sought after just a couple of seasons ago.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Roma, because they’re a great club with a great history,” Aouar said.

“I think it’s the right project for me, with a big team, quality players and a unique fanbase. I’m now a Giallorossi player and I’m ready to go.”

Aouar leaves Lyon having made 179 Ligue 1 appearances, with 30 goals and 24 assists. He has also played 34 games and scored five goals in European competitions, including the Champions League and the Europa League.

Aouar is a young player who’s already made more than 250 professional appearances. He has technical quality and the prerequisites to keep getting better,” said Tiago Pinto, the club’s General Manager.

“His desire to come to Roma, despite having attracted interest from several top clubs, is a source of satisfaction for us all.”

Aouar brings added versatility to AS Roma’s midfield

During his time with LyonAouar has shown his ability to play as a central midfielder or in an advanced role behind the strikers.

Injuries have impacted his campaign, having made just 15 appearances throughout the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season. However, he is a player with plenty of experience in the French league and has featured in several European fixtures.

Aouar was an instrumental part of Lyon’s semi-final run in the 2019/20 Champions League, which included eliminating Juventus in the Round of 16. In that edition, he played eight matches, scoring once and supplying six assists.

If he can stay fit and bring that kind of form to Rome, the Algerian midfielder can give the Giallorossi some much-needed creativity.
