Roberto Mancini Italy resignation fallout: FIGC consider lawsuit against new Saudi Arabia coach

The fallout between the Italian Football Federation and Roberto Mancini continues, even after Luciano Spalletti's appointment and Mancini's move to Saudi Arabia. The FIGC are now considering legal action against the former Azzurri coach.

Roberto Mancini‘s decision to resign from his position as coach of the Italy Men’s National Team came out of the blue this summer, and the case is a long way from being resolved even if both the coach and Italian Football Federation appear to have moved on. Now, the FIGC are considering a lawsuit against Mancini.

Although Mancini has since taken the job to coach the Saudi Arabia national team, and the FIGC have appointed Napoli‘s Serie A-winning coach Luciano Spalletti to replace him, the fallout between the Federation and former Azzurri coach continues.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, and via CalcioNews24, the FIGC are want to request damages from Mancini. The report explains that the coach’s resignation was never formally accepted.

Why are the FIGC and Roberto Mancini arguing?

The news that Mancini had decided to walk away from his role as Italy boss came as a huge surprise on Sunday, August 13. As reported by, things had calmed down after the outrage that followed his failure to lead the Azzurri to the 2022 World Cup.

Just days before his sudden resignation, Mancini had been named Coordinator of the Under-20 and Under-21 sides, suggesting a commitment to the future of the Italy Men’s National Team.

Mancini surprised the Italian Football Federation, who reportedly never accepted the resignation.

“The Italian Football Federation [FIGC] announces that it has acknowledged the resignation of Roberto Mancini from his position of coach of the Italian Men’s National Team, received late yesterday evening,” the FIGC wrote in their press release on Sunday, August 13, following the news of the coach’s resignation.

After announcing his resignation, Mancini lamented that there was too much interference in his work from Gravina and the FIGC in general, leading to him calling time on his spell with the national team shortly before the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Roberto Mancini Saudi Arabia contract

Italian media have reported that Mancini has penned a contract as coach of the Saudi Arabia national team until 2027 and that he will pocket €25 million per year after tax.

Luciano Spalletti has replaced Mancini as Italy boss, having opted to step away from Napoli after leading the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2022/23. He announced his decision before the season had come to a close, and at first suggested that he was keen to take time away from football.

Shortly after the end of the season, though, Spalletti insisted that he did not need to take a break.
