Roberto Mancini resigns as Italy coach: Why has he quit, and is Luciano Spalletti lined up to replace him?

It's official - Roberto Mancini has resigned from his position as Italy MNT coach, with his decision coming as a shock, catching the FIGC off guard. Now, is Luciano Spalletti the man to take over?

It continues to be a summer of transition for Italian National Teams, with Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini having resigned from his position. His decision to step down as boss of the Men’s National Team comes just days after Women’s National Team boss Milena Bertolini confirmed that she would not continue in charge of the Azzurre after their failed 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign.

Mancini had been in his position as Azzurri coach since 2018, following Gian Piero Ventura‘s failure to qualify Italy for the 2018 World Cup. With that shortcoming having been seen as a rock bottom for Italian football, Ventura‘s position swiftly became untenable. Mancini, though, then failed to secure qualification for the 2022 World Cup despite winning the 2020 European Championship.

Why did Roberto Mancini resign as Italy Men’s National Team coach?

The news that Mancini had decided to walk away from his role as Italy boss came as a huge surprise on Sunday, August 13. As reported by Sportface.it, things had calmed down after the outrage that followed his failure to lead the Azzurri to the 2022 World Cup.

Just days before his sudden resignation, Mancini had been named Coordinator of the Under-20 and Under-21 sides, suggesting a commitment to the future of the Italy Men’s National Team.

FIGC confirm Mancini’s resignation in press release

“The Italian Football Federation [FIGC] announces that it has acknowledged the resignation of Roberto Mancini from his position of coach of the Italian Men’s National Team, received late yesterday evening,” the FIGC wrote in their press release on Sunday, August 13.

“With it, we conclude a significant chapter in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and concluded with the 2023 UEFA Nations League finals. In between, there was the triumph at Euro 2020, a victory conquered by a group in which all of the individuals became united as a team.

“With the important and upcoming Euro 2024 qualification fixtures [in September against North Macedonia and Ukraine], the FIGC will announce the name of the new National Team coach in the coming days.”

Following Roberto Mancini‘s decision to resign as Italy coach, former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti is in pole position to take the reins.

Spalletti opted to step away from the Partenopei after leading the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2022/23, announcing his decision before the season had come to a close, and at first suggested that he was keen to take time away from football. Shortly after the end of the season, though, Spalletti insisted that he did not need to take a break, leading to suggestions even then that he would be prepared to take over as Azzurri boss.
