SC Braga 1-2 Napoli: Goals, highlights and report – Champions League 2023/24

Napoli were fortunate to leave Portugal with all three points from their Champions League opener, with a late own goal handing the Italian champions a win to get up and running.

Rudi Garcia‘s Napoli were beyond fortunate to escape with a 2-1 win as they faced SC Braga in Portugal for their 2023/24 Champions League opener, becoming the only of Serie A’s representatives to take all three points from the four in action.

Napoli were well on top for much of the first half, and thought they would have the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot, only for VAR intervention to lead to a spot-kick awarded to them later overturned. They did go in front in the first half though with Giovanni Di Lorenzo firing in off the crossbar. Bruma levelled for the hosts in the 84th minute and they looked set to take a point, but Sikou Niakate suffered the misfortune of turning a cross into his own goal in the 88th to hand the Italian champions the points.

Napoli sit alongisde Real Madrid on three points at the top of Champions League Group C after Matchday 1, following Jude Bellingham‘s late winner for the 14-time European champions against Union Berlin earlier in the evening.
