Serie A 2023/24: Player of the Week – Matchday 15

Luis Muriel may have won Atalanta the game against AC Milan, but it was Ademola Lookman who was the star during the 3-2 win at the Gewiss Stadium and won the 2023/24 Player of the Week award for Matchday 15.

Ademola Lookman dealt AC Milan’s hopes of rejoining the title race a major blow, after playing a significant role as Atalanta beat the Rossoneri 3-2 win at the Gewiss Stadium and received the 2023/24 Serie A Player of the Week award for Matchday 15.

La Dea defeated the Milanese giants in Bergamo for the first time since December 2019, with the 26-year-old grabbing a brace and Luis Muriel scoring an eye-catching winner in injury-time, after Olivier Giroud and Luka Jovic had each scored equalisers.

The former Everton striker was on the attack straight from kick-off, as Lookman attempted to exploit an injury-hit Milan defence and extend his impressive form in Bergamo. The attacker had been involved in four of the Nerazzurri’s last six goals at home and ended the game with six – five goals and one assist – in nine.

However, there was more than a stroke of luck for his 38th minute opener, with Lookman’s low drive heavily deflected over the diving Mike Maignan in the Rossoneri goal. The first goal should have come earlier in the game, though, when he sent a perfectly weighted header to Charles De Ketelaere, but the Milan loanee blazed over from close range.

Another double for Ademola Lookman

Just after half-time, the Belgian international made up for his glaring miss by helping Atalanta retake the lead, driving in from the left-hand side and finding a perfectly placed Lookman to sweep the ball home. It was the 22-year-old’s fourth assist at the Gewiss Stadium and the second for the Nigerian international.

In 2023, only Lautaro Martinez of Inter and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen have scored multiple goals in games more times than Lookman, highlighting his increasing importance to La Dea. The ex-Charlton youth prodigy probably should have had a hat-trick and put the hosts 3-1 ahead, but shot straight at Maignan when reacting first to a loose ball in the area.
